This past weekend, I at-
tended an “Open Studio” Tour
in the Port Townsend, Wash-
ington area. It spanned mul-
tiple counties and they didn’t
hesitate to cross the city lim-
its signs of several little towns
that dot the coast there. There
were over 40 artist studios and
galleries participating.
It’s always fun to tour what is
normally a very private realm.
Although I’m sure they clean
up a bit for company, their
workspaces are as varied as
their personalities.
I wish our own area artists
were as open to collaboration
as the Pacific Northwest guys
are. As it is, sometimes it’s like
pulling teeth to get folks from
Corpus Christi or Port Aran-
sas over to see a show at the
Rialto Theater, although I’ve
never hesitated to enjoy First
Fridays or First Saturdays or
shows and music in their com-
munities. And when I’ve sug-
gested organizing group events
like this open studio tour we
just enjoyed, most folks look at
me like I’ve got three heads.
I personally think collabora-
tion is an extremely strong tool
to entice more tourism and
locals out and about to take a
fresh look at the hidden talents
right outside their back door.
I can’t find a source for who
first said, “A rising tide floats
all boats,” but I think that say-
ing is an extremely powerful
one. We’re all a little stron-
ger when we work together to
