Declamation
Friday afternoon the student body
met in the auditorium for the first de-
clamation elimination. The declaimers
were eliminated down to two speakers
in each division. The final elimina-
tion will be held the night of the

Johnnie Pearl Carter, a sophomore
in our school, was married last Sat-
urday at 10 o’clock to B. J. Norwood.
This young couple was married in
Comanche. They are making their
home in Soda Springs cpmmunity.
Her friends and former classmates of
Beattie wish for her a very happy,
and successful life.
Mrs. Mary Fields and son visited
Mr. and Mrs. H -S. Halbrooks and Mr.
and Mrs. H. E. Ross Sunday.

E. W. Abbey went to the Donkey
basketball game at Sidney this week.
Mr. and Mrs. Jess Warren and

Mrs. H. S. Halbrooks last Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Lightfoot spent
Friday night at Dublin visiting J. J.
Whisenant, Mrs. Lightfoot’s brother.
They returned to De Leon Saturday
night to attend Texas Exes banquet
which was held at the Travelers
Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Lightfoot are
both graduates of the University of
Texas.
Baseball News
Beattie boys and girls baseball
teams went to Sidney Wednesday ev-
ening. Our girls were defeated 22-6.
Beattie boys defeated Sidney 12-3.
The girls have agreed that a little
more practice will help to remedy the
situation indicated above.
Mr. and Mrs.' C- T. Nash are the
parents of a son, Jimmy Charles,
bora March 2, 1940 at the St. Jo-
seph’s Hospital, Fort Worth. The
little son weighed 7 1-2 lbs. at birth.
Both mother and son are doing well
and are at home at 1210—15th Place,
Forth Worth.
Sam Rich, 72, died at his home in
East Newport last night at 7:30, after
an HI ness of several weeks duration.
Born in Kingston, Tenn., Nov. 8, 1868,
Mr. Rich came with his parents to
Jackson county 11 years later, set-
tling in Village township . Herd he
farmed for several years, being con-
nected with the Littletan plantation.
In 1896 he was ir.arr?d to Mrs. Em-
ma Owens Pistole, who survive with
one step-daughter, Mrs. J. L. McClel-
lan.
About 20 years arro the family
moved to Newport, where Mr. Rich
was employed by the county for
many years as road supervisor. La-
ter he was connected with business
firms in various capacites, among
, them W. B. Hurley’s and Miller Cren-
l shaw Company. He was elected cor-
! oner for several terms, retiring last
year because of ill health.
Besides his widow and Mrs. Mc-
Clellan, he is survived by a brother,
R. J. Rich, and one sister, Miss Kate
Rich, both of Tuckerman; one grand-
daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hipp, and three
great-grandchildren, J. W., Gloria
and .Rich, of Dawson, Ga.—Newport
News.
Mr. Rich was a cousin by marriage
of Judge, W. B. Smith of De Leon.
He and his good family formerly liv-
ed in (he New Hope community and
. have many friends in and near De-
leon who will regret to hear of his
death.
