and waved. His father waved
back, and continued on into
the business. He later ex-
plained, “I couldn’t see who
it was, I thought it was just
someone who knows me, so I
just waved back.”
Smiling as he recalls watch-
ing his father return the wave,
Lacue said he got out of the
car and followed his dads path
toward the newspaper office,
keeping him on the phone as
well. When the son entered
the newspaper office and his
father turned around to see
his son walking in, at first he
just looked at his phone. He
then said, “What are you doing
here?” and the two embraced.
It was a short visit as Lacue
had to head back Friday, June
23, but he enjoyed the time he
was here. Referring to the visit
three weeks ago as well as this
one, Lacue said, “it feels really
good {to be here},” but noted a
lot of things have changed in
his little hometown.
What he misses the most,
however, is something which
has not changed, and that is
“the people, and how nice they
are,” Lacue Jr. said. He added,
I tell everybody that in North
Carolina.”
After high school and be-
fore he enlisted in the Coast
Guard, Lacue Jr. worked at
the Ingleside Navy Base. He
explained he saw the oppor-
tunities he had and the fact he
could go to school and not pay
for it.

That prompted him to en-
list in the U.S. Coast Guard, a
job which became a career, as
he will soon be celebrating 20
years of service. His father is
very proud of him and pleased
he has been serving in the
Coast Guard for almost two
decades. He wanted to publish
“something” about his sons
accomplishments, but also had
the opportunity to introduce
his son in person.
During his short visit,
Lacue was glad to see his mom
Rosemary, and siblings, Shan-
non Lacue Strigger, Ebony
Lacue, and April Lacue Hardy.
His only brother, Sean Lacue
is a United States Navy Sea-
bee stationed in Japan at this
time, and they have not seen
each other for three years.
With Lacue Jr. going to Alaska,
he has no idea when they will
have a chance to see each oth-
er, but said he looks forward to
coming home whenever that
might be - and who knows,
it just might prompt another
surprise visit.

The Aransas Pass Hibiscus Garden Club awarded the home of
Mike and Gindy Hanks as yard of the month. Passersby can't
help but notice the beautifully manicured yard at the corner
of Deberry and 11th. The backyard boasts tall oak trees and
flowering plants such as colorful hibiscus. Lining the street
are crepe myrtles waiting to bloom. The backyard patio has
numerous container plantings, while the garden path is lined
with three types of plumeria. Mike has a love of plants and is
graciously shares his knowledge. Their home has a vegetable
garden filled with cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, and onions.
In addition they grow two distinctive types of peppers; purple
peppers and pinot noir poblanos. Among the vegetable
plants, small purple flowers add a touch of color.
