digging or it can be

geL
When considering chemical weed
control, it might be well to
remember that you are trying to
remove an undesirable plant that Is
growing among desirable plants and
many times it is not an easy task.
Generally, lawn weeds may be
divided into two groups, those that
have broad leaves such as
chickweed, hen bit, spurge, etc., and
those that have grassy type loaves
such as dallisgrass, crabgrass,
goosegrass, etc.
Grassy type weeds may be
controlled in Bermuda lawns with
either MSMA (monosodium
methanearsonate) or DSMA
(disodium methanearsonate).
Several applications may be
necessary and the Bermuda may
turn yellow, but it should recover.
Grassy type weeds cannot be
selectively controlled in a St.
Augustine lawn. They may be
removed by spot treating Just the
individual weed with either of the
above chemicals or with glyphosate
, (tradename-RounduporKleenup).
Broadleaf weeds are usually
controlled with products containing
2,4-D, MCPP and dicamba. These
chemicals are not safe for every
lawn or for every situation. The only
way to be sure is to check the label
on the container. Be sure the
chemical will control the weed you
are after, is safe to use on the type ef
lawn you hae, and will not injure
nearby ornamental plants.
For best results, apply the
herbicide only when the weeds are
actively growing. The hardest time
to kill a weed is when it is hot and
dry and the weed is under moisture
stress. Try to pick a cooler day with
little wind movement and when soil
moisture levels are fairly high.
Summer annual weed control can
be obtained by applying pre-
emergent chemicals such as Baten,
Dachtal or Betasan in mid- to late-
February each year.
Winter annual weed control can be
obtained by applying pre-emergent
chemicals such as Balaa, Dacthal or
Betasan in early to late September
each year.

CONTROL GRASSBURS IN LAWNS
Grassburs can be a problem In
lawns damaged or weakened by
droughts, insects and diseases.
Grassburs are commonly found in
open fields and meadows where
competition from other plants is not
great; they are rarely found in a
dense vigorous turf. But when that
turf is damaged or weakened,
grassburs often invade.
Seed (burs) from this peat may lie
dormant in the soil for several years
until environmental conditions favor
germination. Once they get started,
where there were only a few plants
one year, there may be hundreds of
grassbur plants (jjte following year.
All the grassbur needs to become a
problem is a weak turf and
favorable moisture conditions
during late spring and early
summer. Plants may go unnoticed
most of the summer; but once burs
develop, they are unavoidable.
It takes a good management
program to eliminate grassburs.
This indudes applying a preemerge
herbicide in the spring for crabgrass
control before emergence of
grassburs. Herbicides containing
benefin (Baton), DCPA (Dacthal),
oxadiazon ’(Ronstar) or simazine
are effective aganist grassburs if the
timing and rate of application are
correct As for all pesticides, cloudy
follow label instructions.
In bermudagrass towns,
postemerge herbicides can be used
for grassbur control during the
growing season. These include
products containing one of the
organic arsenical herbicides, such a
Ortho’s Crabgrass Kfitor,
Shamrock’s Liquid DSMA,
Amcbem’s Weedone Crabgrass
Kilter, or other weed kilters
containing MSMA or DSMA. Follow
all label directions on the product
selected.
Of course, herbicides only provide
a temporary solution to the graaabur
probtem. A healthy vigorous turf is
the ultimate solution. Regular
mowing and proper fertiUztog,
watering and peat control are all
required for satisfactory control of
grassburs.
