hurricane.
The owner pointed out
the building was built in the
1940s, and it has withstood
some storms. So with Har-
vey approaching, he boarded
up the front and that was it.
He said he didn’t take any-
thing out of the building or
down from the walls.
Lawrence went home to
Corpus Christi, and said he
was thinking when he got
back, there would be four
feet of water in the building.
He is not from this area, and
has never been through a
hurricane, but from what he
had heard from others talk-
ing about floods, when he
locked the door, he expected
a lot of water.
He returned to Aransas
Pass the next day after the
hurricane hit. He said it was
difficult getting in to town,
pointing out his vehicle sus-
tained two flats coming in as
he was running over things.
When he made it to down-
town, the streets were not
flooded and when he came
around the corner, he saw
the building still standing.
He laughed as he recalled
saying, “Whew Praise God.”
When he opened the
door, however, he still
thought it would have been
flooded, but there was noth-
ing, and he felt overwhelm-
ing gratitude. He was very
pleasantly surprised, noting
the building owner was out
of town and when he sent
her details everything was
fine, they both throught,
“Wow.”
Lawrence said, “It had
God’s hand over it,” explain-
ing that’s what he believes as
he sees the damage in areas
all around the shop.
He said they lost some
charts, had some electrical
damage and the big sign was
blown away. Overall he said,
“We actually did real well,
there was a little roof dam-
age, and we had four or five
spots that leaked water, but
compared to everybody else,
we don’t even like to men-
tion it.”
The shop was closed the
month of September, and
Lawrence admits he was a
little hesitant about opening
back up because everybody
else was so wiped out. How-
ever, he said, “The whole
community said yes they
needed to see some things
coming back, so we opened
up in October.”
The community support-
ed the Disciple Ship when its
doors opened, so Lawrence
returned the favor by re-
opening.
He said the shop did pret-
ty well through Christmas,
but January and February
were terribly flat. He is opti-
mistic about summer, noting
everyone who comes in says,
“As soon as I get sheetrock
on the wall, I’m going to buy
that, etc.”
Lawrence added, “I think
once people start decorating
and get back up we’ll be all
right.”
FAMILY PRACTICE
In the aftermath and

through recovery, Lawrence
advice is to keep working to
come back, “Stay at it, we’re
going to come back stronger
than ever.”
He also pointed out, “It’s
a shame that we suffered the
loss and all, but sometimes
a face lift is good. The com-
munity is now talking about
doing things to liven up the
downtown, I think all that’s
good, I think we need it.
Sometimes
you get complacent and you
see stuff up for so long you
don’t even see it, and this
comes in and kind of cleans
house, and you’ve got to put
something new up. As hard
as it is to say it, it might have
been good in the long run.”
