Aransas Pass VFW Post 2932 would like to send a special thank you to Aransas Pass High School art teacher Scott for painting the mural on the Veterans Memorial Park fence. "He did an out-
standing job,"Jr. Vice Commander Jerry Marquez said. "I'm thankful for his time and efforts in working with me to get this done for our park." Pictured is the mural which can be seen at Veterans
Memorial Park along the fence.

calorie intake. After
attending a meeting for the
first time, members are
advised to make an appoint-
ment with their doctor in
order to determine a comfort-
able goal weight. From there,
members are simply working
to meet their goal and meet-
ing it by reducing caloric
intake.
will neither gain nor lose
weight if he or she consumes
that amount of calories.
Reducing that amount by 500
would put one into a caloric
deficit and save 3,500 calories
a week. “You know how many
calories are in a pound?
3,500,” Fenner said.
Members aren’t forced to
exercise either but encouraged
to find an activity in order to
stay healthy, and members
who reach their goal weight
graduate from the TOPS
members to KOPS which
means they are now supposed
to be Keeping Off Pounds
Sensibly. KOPS still attend
TOPS meetings, which they
find to be of greater value than
some of the other tools pro-
vided. “TOPS is about taking
off pounds, but keeping it off
as well,” Fenner said,
explained that some members
become KOPS, leave the
meetings and end up putting
the weight back on only to
return and start the process
over. “Its much easier to take
it off than it is to keep it off,”
Fenner said. “I think overeat-
ing is kind of like being an
alcoholic. Foodoholics, when
they quit attending the meet-
ings, very few make it.” Two of
the local KOPS are repeats
and prefer to attend the meet
ings.
Garner works for Meals on
Wheels, and while delivering
food one day, she was told of
TOPS by a delivery recipient
on her route. In her first
month with TOPS, Garner
lost 10 pounds, but she
stresses the importance of the
continued support TOPS
meetings provide her. “Its not
a quick fix,” Garner said. The
program is meant to provide
long-term support to encour-
age members to not only lose
weight, but also keep it off.
However, there are no punish-
ments for gaining either.
“If you gained weight,
we’ll support you,” Garner
said. “We’re not here to make
one person feel higher or
lower because you gained and
I lost. We believe in modera-
tion. Everyone’s different. ” If
one is thinking of attending
the meeting, Garner has an
olive branch to extend.
“If you want to come in
and sit down and listen, we’ll
not impress upon you,”
Garner said. “See if it’s some-
thing that may help with your
weight loss. See if it’s some-
thing you’re comfortable with.
We don’t harass or chase, we
just want you to know that
we’re here and that you’re wel-
come to join us.”
This could be because of
the huge support network
Not

TOPS has provided,
every member is
Ingleside either, with indi-
viduals coming from Aransas
Pass, Corpus Christi, and
Rockport. Andrette Garner is
the Secretary for the Ingleside
chapter and makes the com-
mute from Rockport in order
to attend her meetings.
“This was my life line,”
Garner said. Her doctor told
He
“We help determine what
your maintenance calories
are,” Fenner said. To deter-
mine maintenance calories,
add a zero to weight, so if one
weighs 260 pounds, his or her
maintenance calories are
2,600 a day. This means one
her six years ago that she had
to lose weight in order to
improve her quality of life.

Pate shared how the fam-

love for horses came full circle
through their daughter.
“There is never a bad thought
