disclosed Wednesday.
The terrific speed, perhaps
faster than any human being
has traveled before, froze their
control sticks, the pilots report-
ed, causing them to resort to
the use of emergency cranks to
move the elevator s tabs and
pull their ships out of the dive.
Lieut. Harold Comstock and
Lieut. Ioger Dyar, both 22,
went aloft in Republic P-47
Thunderbolts Nov. 15 for hori-
zontal speed runs at 35,000
feet, then at 30,000 and at 25,-
000 feet.
Both resorted to the emer-
gency cranks to move elevator
tabs.
“When I rolled back on the
tabs,” Comstock said, “the
plane shuddered as though it
had been hit by a truck. Frank-
ly I wondered whether the tail
section was still there, but the
ship was as well knit as the
Siamese twins”!
Both were credited with of-
ficially listed speeds of 725
miles an hour. The speed of
sound at sea level is 736 miles
an hour, but decreases as the
density of air decreases at
higher altitudes.
Both pilots reported they re-
tained mental clarity during
the dives. ?
