The new minimum wage bill approved, by Congress after months of.debate and compro-j
mise raises the wage floor under the Fair Labor Standards Act from the present $1.25 an
hour to $1,40 next February and $1.60 in February 1968. It also extends coverage to more
than eight million workers in jobs not previously covered—such as farm hands, laundry
workers, hospital orderlies, waitresses, bellhops, and school janitors. Newscharf, covering
the 30-yeqr hjstoryof the minimum, wage from a starting point of $.25 an hour in 1938,
shows amount, date and duration of each increase.

WASHINGTON (AP)
J.W. Fulbright apparently will
not be able to throw the lime-
light of public hearings on the
American buildup in Thailand
as he had hoped.
He is running into reluctance
not only from the administra-
tion but from some members of
his Senate Foreign Relations
Committee, whose Viet Nam
and China hearings were the
forum for much of the foreign
policy debate in the Senate this

Two committee members,
Sens. Karl E. Mundt, R-S.D.,
and John J. Sparkman, D-Ala.,
said they believed a majority of
the Committee did not want pub-
lic hearings on American opera-
tions in Thailand, where the
United States is building bases
and has stationed some 26,000
servicemen. .
,4I think a majority of the
committee feels that in the mid-
dle of a war you don’t have
hearings on a country associat-
ed with you irt a war," said
Mundt.
Mundt and Sparkman gave
their views after the committee
questioned Assistant Secretary
of State William P. Bundy Tues-
day on the Thailand situation.
Members said afterward they
learned little from Bundy at the
closed session that they hadn’t
already read in the newspapers.
Fulbright, an Arkansas Dem-
ocrat, said the administration
official's reluctance to discuss
the Thai operations in public
was due to the Thailand govern-
ment’s desire to keep them an
official secret.

DALLAS (API—For the fifth
time In 118 years the Disciples
of Christ will vote whether to
officially become a church.
Similar efforts at restructure
were voted down in 1848, 1870,
1880' and 1912. -
Dr. A. Dale Fieri of Indiana-
polis, executive secretary of the
International Convention of
Christian Churches (Disciples
of Christ) said Thursday that if
the proposal is approved, a year
will be set aside to work out
the details and a confirming
vote will be taken In 1987 at
St. Louis.
The estimated 15,000 lay dele-
gate* and ministers are ex-
pected here for the Disciples
convention starting Friday.
Flan said the Disciples have
been functioning for ISO years
as • fellowship. If the restruc-
ture Is adopted, the religious
group would formally become
th« Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ). .
