MEMPHIS, Term. (AP) —
You could have expected de-
fending champion Jack Nick-
laus to be concerned about over-
taking the leaders on the 17th
green, but an unusual thought
crossed his mind.
Nicklaus has never shot a 63
in the United States, and he had
a chance to do it In the second
round of the 3100,000 Memphis
Open Golf Tournament Friday If
, he oouldi birdie the last two
holes.
At that point, he was trailing
Bert Yancey and Gene Littler
the season and
who carried elght-under-par
132$ into today’s third round.
Nicklaus .reached the short
17th hole hr one and wa* 10 feet
from foe pin.
“As 1 looked at It, I realized I
had never shot a 63 in the
states,” he said. “My putt
pulled up short, and I went on to
birdie IB for a 64.”
It was his first 64 since foe
third round of the 1965 Masters.
.That left Nicklaps with a 136
— four strokes off foe pace.
Yancey, first day leader at 63,
shot K one-under-par 69 Friday,
but was tied for fo« lead by foe
veteran Littler who shot a 66 for
the second straight day.
Jack Rule had a second-round
68 for a 36-hole total of 135, fol-
lowed by Bruce Devlin, Johnny
Pott, Bob Goalby, Tommy Ja-
cobs, Wright Garrett, Homero
Blancas, Bob Chares and Nl-
lau* at 136,
Many of foe players said the
6,466-yard Colonial Country Club
course was harder to beat Fri
Blancas, Bob Charle? and Nick-
day. But Nlckau* was happy
with its conditioning.
Littler, who lost playoffs in
the Memphis Open In 1960 and
1962, played more consistently
than anyone else during foe first
two days. But he wasn't satis-
fied with foe second round.
