Twenty years before the Civil
War, the Old Palestine Church was
an important part of the com-
munity. located about six miles
East of Alto just off the El Camino
Real It was first called by the
name, Mount Olive, and the first
preacher was the Rev. Isaac Reed
The congregation worshipped in
homes in the area, one hundred and
forty years ago, up until 1854
At that time. Capt. and Mrs
Henry Berryman donated the land
upon which the present church now
stands The present structure is the
third church at this site The early
churches also contained a school
room for the children of the com-
munity.
Many of the present members are
proud to have been born and raised
in the surrounding community and
have worshipped in no other chur
ch. Distant relatives from the foun
ding group are stili a1 live in Old
Palestine and each year they
gather from near and far lur the
annual IlMinccommg that is held the
second Sunday in June Fm mum
years il was culled Hie "Second
Sunday in June" with all day
singing and dinner on the grounds.
Now it is Homecoming day with
dinner in the air conditioned
fellowship hall. This year,
Homecoming is set for June 8
The Rev. Hollis Bass took over
the pastorate of the church last
Fall He and his wife, Catherine,
have a daughter, Holli Both mother
and daughter play the piano and
sing for the congregation, upon oc-
casion The Basses are formerly
from East Texas, and returned here
from their former church in
Florida
