The American Cancer Society in
conjunction with the Birmingham
Golf Course in Rusk will hold its fir-
st annual scramble golf tournament
at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.
Golfers can enter by contacting
Milt Harris at the Birmingham Golf
Course. Entries close at 4 p.m. the
day of the event.
All proceeds will go the American
Cancer Society to fund its cancer
education, service to cancer patien-
ts, and research programs, some of
the services available locally in-
clude films, pamphlets, programs,
and guest speakers for your school,
club or organization. For cancer
patients, wheel chairs, walkers,
hospital beds, commode chairs,
ostomy supplies, dressings and
many other loan and gift items are
available at no cost to the patient.
The format of the event will be a
nine hole, three man scramble
Awards will be given to the first
place team. Additional prizes in-
clude a putter for closest shot to
hole number 7, and a dozen golf
balls for longest drive on hole num-
ber 2. The entry fee will be $20 per
person and is tax deductible. The
cost includes greens fee and golf
carts while they last. Soft drinks
will be provided at the finish. For
additional information and
registration interested persons can
contact Milt Harris at 683-2041.

The first gasoline pump was
manufactured in a barn by Syl-
vanus F. Bowser of Fort Wayne, In-
diana. That was in 1885. On Sep-
tember 5th of that year the first
pump and tank were delivered. The
tank had marble valves, wooden
plungers, and a capacity of one bar-
rel.
