Mrs. Georgia A. Grogan Mrs. Mattie Everett
Funeral for Mr*. Georgie A.
Grogan of Rusk was at 2 p.m. Wed-
neaday in the Wallace-Thompeon
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
James Goforth officiating. Burial
was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Grogan died Tuesday in a
Jacksonville hospital after a brief
illness. She was born at Alto and
was a member of the Rusk First
Baptist Church.
Mrs. Grogan was the widow of
Henry Grogan of Rusk. She was the
daughter of George Houston and
Mary Aliice White Houston and was
a direct descendant of General Sam
Houston. She was preceded in death
by two brothers and two sisters,
Rayford Houston, Alton Houston,
Minnie Hewitt and Edith Mann.
Survivors include Mrs. Maurine
Walker, Mrs. Irene Starkey, Mrs.
Kay Reynolds Nolley, Mrs. Fran-
cise Butler, Mrs. Louise Houston,
Vernon Grogan, all of Rusk, Mrs.
Q. Bell Houston of Alto and several
nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Robert Grogan,
DeWayne Grogan, Jimmy Houston,
Mike Houston, Kenneth Mann and
DeWayne Womack Honorary
pallbearers were deacons of the
First Baptist Church.

Services for Mrs. Mattie Mae
Everett, 94, Alto, were held at 11
a.m. Thursday in 0 T Alien & Son
Funeral Home chapel, Alto.
Burial was in Arnold Cemetery
near Alto.
Mrs. Everett died Aug 18 in a
Lufkin hospital after an extended
illness.
She was born July 24, 1892, iri
Cherokee County, was a housewife,
a lifelong resident of Alto and a
member of Alto First Baptist Chur-
ch.
Survivors include two sisters. Iva
Mefford and Lena Campbell, both
of Lufkin; four grandchildren,
Robert Solley, Walworth. N Y . Bet-
ty Burpee and Gail Bunn, both of
Rochester, N Y, and Barbara An
derson, Bedford, Mass and
several great-grandchildren, nieces
and nephews
Friends of family were
pallbearers.

month during September Anyone
who has an overdue book may
return it to the library without
paying a fine. The library is open 1
5 p.m Monday, Wednesday and
Friday. A box similar to a mailbox
is in front of the building for retur-
ning books when the library is not
open

concerning Mr and Mrs. W. T
Liles and Mrs. Katie Covington. In
stead of their going to Tupelo, Miss
last weekend, they went to Terrell
to visit their son and brother, Mr
and Mrs. Ray Covington and
family.
Mrs. F H. Engledow spent a few
days recently in Waco with her son
Jerry Engledow and Ins family She
also visited her mother, Mrs. Bon
Ash and her sister. Mrs Claudine

Mr. and Mrs. Ozeli Maxes’

nesday were Mr and Mrs Ed Lilly
of Houston. Mrs Mayes worked as
a clerk for these people in Houston
for several years and she looks for-
ward to their yearly visit

the guest Sunday night of her
mother. Mrs Doris Corley Christi
Corley of Rusk and Shelley Corley
of Wells were guests during the
weekend of their grandmother.
The girls also visited their parents,
Mr and Mrs. Marshall R Corley.
Mr and Mrs. Marvin Reynolds
made a trip to Shephard Sunday to
visit Mr. Reynolds' sister, Mrs
Sallv Tobias and her family.

Receives Memorials
Monthly Report
Officer D. I) McSwain of the Alto
Police Department reports that
between June 9 and August 11. 1986,
his department issued 81 citations
including 36 for speeding During
that time the Police Department
made 24 arrests and assisted the
Fire Department four times They
also served as funeral escorts three
times, and assisted the ambulance
three times
The Alto Police Department ser-
ved 20 warrants and worked four
accidents in addition to answering
205 calls. The calls ranged from
motor assistance, animal com-
plaints. burglary, theft, suspicious
persons. disturbances. and
prowlers
During the time period listed, thv
police department worked 330 hours
and the Reserve Police Force 128
hours.

The Alto City Cemetery Per-
petual Fund received the following
memorials for Laura Phillips from
the C. A Bennett Sr family, in-
cluding: Verda Bennett, Carroll
and Mary Bennett, Troy and
Katherine Bennett of Overton, Joe
and Vera Rhodes of Garland, and
Truett and Kay Bennett of Abilene
Also from Wells and Minnie
Wright, Guynell Kennedy and the
Nutrition Center people
Carl and Hazel Holcomb gave
memorials for their parents, Mr
and Mrs. J F Allen and Mr and
Mrs. Eugene Holcomb.
The Gold Key Fund has $813.80
and the Perpetual Fund has $45,200
The interest from both funds go into
the working lurid for the upkeep of
the cemetery.
The cemetery is city-owned and
