Kangaroo
Tales
j By KAYE BODIFGRD
The battling Kangaroos dropped a
loss in the final game of the season
to the tall Vernon Lions. Weather-
ford outscored Vernon in the first
quarter, dropped several points in
the second quarter, and never man-
aged to rally back until late in the
final quarter where the score ended
82-51.
Jesse Lockhart hit for 18 points,
Dale Ruth tallied 12 points, and Bob-
by Tarpley threw in for 6. The Roos
had 11 of the 16 free throws made
good while the Vernon Lions seldom
missed their targets.
League Standing
The big and talented Graham Steers
took the cage title while Vernon and
Brownwood were close behind.
Weatherford closed the year out
with a 4-8 record. Seniors Bobby Tar-
pley, Drew Springer, and Jesse Lock-
hart made the Vernon game their
last High School Basketball game.
Is There Room for Me
*Ts there room for me?” This can
be heard nearly' everyday when one
sees a group of people with tennis
rackets in their hands. With a cloud
of dust the P.E. girls, tennis team
members, and interested tennis be-
ginners head for the courts in hopes
they’ll be lucky to get one of the four
newly built tennis courts. Tennis
seems to be getting very popular a-
round WHS this year since the school
has built new courts.
Tracksters Working
WHS has several tracksters prac-
ticing at the field house now days.
Roger Williams, A. D. Preston, Dew-
ey Tyre, Dale Ruth, and Paul Simp-
son will be warming-up for the com-
ing track meets to be held later on.
Incidentally, WHS will have a new
cinder track around Kangaroo sta-
dium next September for the school
year ’62-’63.

Golf Team
Starts Drills
If you saw three boys by the nam-
es of Eddie Patton, David Wilson,
and Mike Beard behind the High
School last Friday afternoon swinging
their golf clubs don’t be alarmed.
They were practicing their golf
swings, solely for the purpose of re-
maining on the WHS golf team. These
three boys were on the team last year.
The team this year has two new play
ers who are junior, Phil Jordan, and
a sophomore, Gene Hooker. The team

P. E. Corner
In the boys P. E. classes football
is still the dominating pastime, al-
though several boys in Mr. Ward’s
class have been playing tennis on the
new courts. Some of the boys are
Larry Wilson, David Hutchens, and
Ricky Murray.
When asked about playing football
in fifth period class, Kenny Shelton •
stated its murder with a capital M.
He said that now he has changed to
fourth period since it’s much easier
to come out in one piece.
WHS Kangaroos
To Start Track
Since basketball is over, the sports
spotlight turns to track. Coach Ben
Jackson will be the track coach this
year.
The boys started working out this
week. They have a lot of work to do
before their first meet.
The first track meet will be held
in Fort Worth on March 2. Since the
Weatherford stadium is not well equip-
ped for track, the WHS team will go
to other places for track meets.
