Wednesday night had a good
deal of practical video sense
behind it.
Never mind the fact that the
broadcast, about a half hour in
length, wasn't particularly intel-
lectual or sophisticated or
stylish. Never mind the fact
that Mr. Nixon, who did all of
the talking, is frankly not much
of a phrase-maker in the classic i
sense, and used plenty of
standard political rhetoric.
What was most obvious, and
made clear and simple sense,
was the fact that the next
| indicated—at least far the
present—that he is going to use
! television to make the citizenry
| feel closer to the White House
I and its decision-makers. One
j hopes this initial gesture was
not merely a flash in the pan.
Not Questioned
It is true that there were no
questions from newsmen, or
anything like that, so that the
broadcast—seen on all three
commercial networks startli^
at 10 pan. EST—sometimes
resembled a sales meeting
more than a governmental
function. But this is the new
administration’s time of high
optimism and “team-making,”
so the pep talk atmosphere is at
least understandable.
While intellectuals might well
make sport of Nixon’s introduc-
tion of Ms cabinet in this way—
on television—there Is another
point to be considered. Far far
too many months, we have had
virtual nobodies absurdly cat*,
pulated into undeserved social
and political fame because of
their astute use of television—
and the medium's occasional
tendency, now mostly corrected,
to go overboard on some of
these types.
With this the case. It might
well be argued, why in tee
ley, Rex Hudson, nd Messrs.
Ballard, Ails and Larry WUey.
