PAGR2—LRV1LLANDDAILY SUN NEWS TV 'n«r»* v MAY 1.973
By Loman Jones
In every sport I can think of, the
one who carries or handles the
bell and the one who scores gets
the glory. In football, the backs
and ends are the visible heroes.
The crowds stand and cheer these
dashing fellows as they zig zag to
stardom. The ‘dumb linemen"
whoclearthcway are overlooked
by the majority. The center, the
guards, and the tackles are too
often considered to be “just out
there.” (If you don’t believe it,
start thinking about the backs you
can name as compared to
linemen.) And the men on defense
are “just killing time" until a
“Staubach” can get hold of the
ball again.
In baseball, the pitcher gets
creditfor winning or losing. The
batters may hit everything he
throws over the plat, but if he has
a good infield and outfield, they
canmake him look great.
And this brings me to the
subject of girls' basketball and
defense. I’ve heard that some of
the Little Dribblers girls are
dissatisfied with playing guard,
that defense is all work and no
glory. I agree that’s the way it
seems. It’s tough to hustle the ball
and get it back downcourt so
someone else can reap the praise
of scoring. It’s not much fun
either when a big forward shoots
over your head or drives past you
for twopoints.andyouget to hear
the crowd cheering heron.
But believe it or not, you
guards, there is a great honor in
defense. The nexttime you’re in a
close game, listen to the crowd.
They’ll begin to chant,
“defense,” "defense.” There is
no truer saying in sports than,
"the best offense is a good
defense." And good defense is an
art. It takes great agility, the
ability to move quickly in any
direction to stop an offensive
thrust
The great generals of war, the
master chess players, the Knute
Rocknies and Vince Lombardis
knew and know the significance of
defense. The strength of
America lies grandly in the
hands of those who defend her.
So girls, the next time you’re
feeling low about your “stick in
the mud” defensive roles,
consider this: you’re 50 percent
of the team, and each time you
keepyour opponent from scoring,
you improve the odds of your team
winning.

ing them as world champions.
They had the talent to beat
anybody I “No matter how
good a trainer you are,” ob-
served Reggie Jackson, “you
gotta have a good horse”) but
they coultln’t beat everybody.
Then, suddenly last sum-
mer, they found the ingredi-
ent that was lacking, and now
they wear diamond-encrusted
rings, which shine with the
brilliance of a locomotive
headlight. And it was so
simple.
"We could win the big
games last year,” explained
Jackson.
“The first couple of years
that you’re a contender, you
have to learn how to win ball
games.” He elaborated. “We
had a lot of great talent. But
as a young team, we had not
learned how to go out and
really bear down and play to
win a game that we had to
win. We learned how last
year.
“There are times when a
team goes out and has nothing
going for it. Gets a badly
pitched game, doesn’t play
defense that well or offense
that well, and still finds a way
to win. You know, one or two
guys do the job on each given
day. That's how you win
games you have to win like we
did last year. That’s building
a championship team. It's
playing under pressure.
“I haven’t defined it too
well.” he apologized, “but
there’s a difference between
going out and winning 90

games andfrinning the games
you have to win. It’s like you
can win 70 but there are 70
games that, you’re going to
win anyway! But to win those
extra 20 when you have to win
them is what counts.”
The education of the Athlet-
ics included some instruction
by the Biltimore Orioles
when they blitzed the A’s
three straight in the 1972
American League playoff;
“Baltimore was the cham-
pion," Jackson said They
knew they had to win ball
games. Wedidn’t know how to
win when the chips were
down. We didn’t know how to
win under conditions like that,
with big crowds and every-
thing on the line. So we got the
hell beat out of us. We were
beaten because Baltimore
knew how to win.
“Those three games prob-
ably meant a lot to us growing
up But it wasn’t the whole
deal. You can’t mature in
three games. But we were
learning. I can’t stress that
enough. Learning the funda-
mentals. Learning how to
bunt. Learning how to score a
runner from second base with
nobody out and not get a base
hit. That’s learning how to
win.
“There’s a lot of teams
don’t know how to win. And
it’s not that you put them
down or anything.”
Having savored the sweet
taste of success, the A's hope

to make a steady diet of it. But
they must beware of sore
arms, pulled muscles and fat

When Jackson speaks about
the importance of good
health, his is the voice of ex-
perience. The bearded out-
fielder missed 27 games last
season because of injuries (he
still contributed 2S homers
and 75 RBI), and his role in
the World Series was that of
cheerleader rather than team
leader.
“To say I was disappointed
and disgusted, that’s obvi-
ous,” he remarked. “It’s
something you look forward to
as a kid. You get there, and
you don’t get to play. I hope to
play in it sometime.
“It’s tough to repeat. There
are so many variables. But all
we have to do is stay healthy,
have a good year, and we’ll
win, because we got the best
team. If Reggie stays healthy,
Reggie’s going to have a good
year.
"Since we’re world cham-
pions, they’ll be pointing for
us but we don’t have to get
nervous and excited. We know
how to play. We know how to
win.”
