When your contract depends
on finding a suit distributed in
a particular way, you must play
as though that were surely the
case. If the suit is actually
divided some other way, you
may be down two instead of
one, but at least you’ll get A
for effort.
West won with the ace of
hearts and returned the nine,
but South had made up his mind
that he could not afford to re-
fuse a heart trick. He went up
with dummy’s queen of hearts,
got to his hand with a spade
and tried the club finesse.
Fast could take his king of
clubs, but was out of hearts.
Courage and a bit of luck had
saved the day for South, but
don’t overlook his skill. If South
had played a low heart from Ws
hand on East’s jack, West also
would play low. And if dummy
took the trick with the queen,
East would lead another heart
when he got in with the king of
clubs. West would then defeat
the contract with the rest of his
hearts.
DAILY QUESTION
As dealer, you hold: S-A J 7,
H-K 5 3, D -Q J 5 2, C-J 10 7.
What do you say?
ANSWER: Pass. You have
only 12 points in high cards,
with flat distribution and without
a decent suit. You need about
another queen for an opening
bid.

West opened the eight of dia-
monds, and East won with the
king. East continued with the
ace of diamonds, hoping to see
the queen or jack fail. When
there was no such luck, East
realized that South still had
both of the missing diamond
honors. The suit could not be
brought in.
In desperation, Fast shift-
ed to the jack of hearts, and
now it was South’s turn to be
desperate. South felt sure that
East had the king of clubs for
his opening bid. if so, South
was sure to lose two diamonds
ind one club as well as the ace
A hearts. He could not afford
vo lose a second heart trick.
PLAYS HIGH
The only hope was to find just
two hearts in the Fast hand, with
the other five in the West hand.
With this hope in mind. South
put up the king of hearts when
F.ast led the jack.
