Students participate in Stock Show
By Shannon Rix
Every year around this time
many of Weatherford’s
cowboy’s, cowgirl’s, and FFA
students spend hours preparing
for the Ft. Worth Stock Show.
These students’ goals are to
make their animals as com-
petitive as possible.
Local students are competing
in eight different categories this
year; heifers, barrows, steers,
lambs, breeding sheep, breeding
swine, and two different
categories in dairy.
The students taking heifers to
contest are Tom Davidson,
Juliann Haile, Richard England,
Brian England, and Dawn
Corman.
Studnets competing in the
barrow category include Rodney
Bray, Brad Smith, Jeff Way,
Dwight Matthews, Brent
Hargrave, Richard England,
Jarred Kemp, Kelly Vickers,
Rodney Burrows, and Mike
Shanholtzer.
Those taking lambs are Todd
Price, Kelly Vickers, Kandy
Vickers, Kim Smith, Jason Case,
Jody Stanford, Jeff Gatner,
Michelle Strait, Bobby Burger,,
Vicki Yandell, Michelle
Woodruff, Shane Harris, Jodi
Isbell, Scott Franklin, Donna
Element, Jud Bruton, Missy
Roberson, Michelle Poteet, Toby
Dennis, and Kevin Bone.
Competing with steers are
Kelly Horton and Dena Hollman.
Tracy arnold is entering an
animal in the breeding sheep
category.
David Chilcutt is competing in
both dairy categories-Jr. and
Open.
The FFA students who have
animals competing went as a
group to the stock show this past
Tuesday for showings and today
the entire Ag department is at
the stock show for the judging of
all animals.
The stock show is part of a
yearly project for the FFA
students.
If an animal receives first
place at this showing, it is
considered a “Grand Cham-
pion”, which is the highest rank.
Students whose animals do not
place first may then proceed to
another showing. The next show
is to be in Houston at the
beginning of March. This gives
them two extra weeks to prepare
their animal again.
David Chilcutt, FFA
President, said “This showing in
Houston just gives those students
who didn’t place another try for
the Grand Champion rank.”
