St. Michael’s Church
is sponsoring the annual
Fiesta in celebration of
Mexican Independence
Sept. 15-16 at the Hock-
ley County Fairgrounds
on the Sundown High-
way.
Activities are plan-
ned for both evenings
from 6 p.m. to midnight,
including traditional
Mexican dances perform-
ed by South Plains Col-
lege students, music pro-
vided by El Marichi In-
fantel de Mexico from
Monterey, Mexico, and
the presentation of the
Fiesta Queen and her
court.
Admission to the
Fiesta is $2 per person 12
years and older, and the
stub of each paid ticket
will be put into a drawing
to be held Friday night,
for a $100 grocery gift
certificate. There will
also be another drawing
Friday night for other
prizes including $300, a
waterbed, an oil painting
valued at $200, a ceiling
fan, a black and white
television, a 26 inch bi-
cycle and various other
prizes.
Rev. Timothy ,Sch-
wertner of St. Michael’s
Church will present the
queen and her court at
8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Serving as Fiesta
Queen this year is Elvia
Martinez, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Inez Marti-
nez. She is sponsored by
the St. Michael’s Catholic
Youth Organization.
Veronica Velardez,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
BobDy Velardez, is
ning at First St. and
Avenue K. It will precede
through downtown and
end in the parking lot of
the Vocational Education
School behind the Cham-
ber of Commerce. Gentry
Ford, Keeling Oldsmo-
bile and West Chevrolet
have entered some of
their 1984 cars in the
parade. Trophies will be
awarded to the top three
floats. Everyone is in-
vited to participate in the
parade, either by con-
tacting the church office
or by meeting at the
beginning of the parade
American Queen and is
sponsored by the Fiesta
Committee.
Serving in the court
as Princesses are Linda
Castillo, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Severiano Cas-
tillo, and sponsored by
Las Guadalupa no 9 ;
Maria G. Guajardo,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alcadio Guajardo and
sponsored by the Knight9
of Columbus; and Monica
Rodriguez, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Severiano
Rodriguez and sponsored
by Sagrado Corazon.
A parade is planned
for 4 p.m. Friday, begin-

There will also be a
dance both evenings,
with music provided by
Los Prisoneros de Toho-
ka, plus booths featuring
traditional Mexican food
and games will be open.
All proceeds go to St.
Michael’s Church.

Council of Garden Clubs
met September 9 in the
home of the Council Pre-
sident, Joyce Taylor for
the first meeting of the
new club year with eight
members present.
Mary Towles pre-
sented the minutes and
had the roll call. The
minutes of the last meet-
ing were approved as
read.
The treasurer’s re-
port was given by Retha
Lincoln.
The president asked
that each club discuss a
location for a Garden and
Art Center in our city,
possibly in the Santa Fe
Depot which has been
given to the City. Hope-
fully , this building will be
moved to the vicinity of
Lobo Lake.
The council asked
each garden club to be
thinking about a Christ-
mas project. The club9
are to report to the
council at the next meet-
ing.
Shanna Brooks,
Leatherwood
to be wed

Brooks announce the en-
gagement of their daugh-
ter, Shanna Jene, to Tim-
othy Loyd Leatherwood.
He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. J.W. Leatherwood of
