Sundown Roughnecks not taking Lazbuddie lightly
The Sundown Rough-
necks are off to a 2-0
start on the 1983 football
season after disposing of
Ralls 26-6 last Friday.
This week they travel to
Lazbuddie to play the
Longhorns who lost to
White face 33-6, but Sun-
down coach Mike Mothe-
ral says his team will not
be looking past the
‘Homs. ,
"We jtell our kids
each week ‘this is the
most important game of
the year’ because this is
the game we are playing
this week,” Motheral
said.
Motheral said he was
surprised by the score of
the Whiteface-Lazbuddie
game and added he did
not think the score was
indicative of the game.
‘‘My scouts tell me
that Lazbuddie was able
to move the ball, but they
just could not score,” he
stated.
The Longhorns run
out of a wishbone offense
which means the Rough-
necks will have to de-
fense the option play as
well as the power playsi
Motheral also said the

Mike Voigt places second at Hobbs
Mike Voigt, South
Plains College sophomore
from Slaton, shot a five
under par 67 during the
second round of the New
Mexico Junior College In-
vitational Tournament to
take runner-up medalist
honors this past weekend
in Hobbs, N.M.
Voigt, SPC’s top re-
turning golfer for the
1983-84 season, shot a 74
the first day on 18 holes
and then slashed his score
by seven strokes to finish
with a two-round total of
141. Mike Standley of
Western Texas College
took medalist honors with
a dual 68 for 136 strokes in
the two rounds. Bobby
Romero of NMJC took
third with dual 71s for
142.
‘‘Mike played an ex-
ceptional second round,”
said SPC golf coach Larry
Roberts. ‘‘The team as a
whole played pretty good,
but we seemed to be
plagued with putting
problems on the second
day.
As a team, the SPC
orange squad finished
sixth with a team total of
604. NMJC Red took the
tournament with a team
score of 588; WTC Blue
was next with a score of
590. Odessa College fin-
ished third with a 591; and
NMJC gold team took
fourth with 599. New
Mexico Military Institute
finished fifth with 602.
‘‘You know I said last
week that we had an
outstanding recruiting
year,” said Roberts.
‘‘Well it looks like every-
one in the conference had
an exceptional recruiting
year.” Roberts said that
coaches at the season
opener meet for the West-
ern Junior College Athlet-
ic Conference agreed that
1983-84 was going to be
the toughest season in the
past eight years. ‘‘But I
still feel that we are going
to do well this year,” he
added.
Morton freshman
Ricky Houston finished
second for the Texans and
14th overall in the tourna-
ment, shooting a three
under par 69 on the first
day and an 81 the second
for a total of 150 strokes.
Scores for the remain-
ing SPC golfers include El
Eagles to tackle Plains Cowboys
The Ropes Eagles will
face Plains this Friday
night at 8 on the Cowboys’
home field. Both Ropes
and Plains have dropped
their first two games of
the season.
‘‘Plains lost to Dim-
mitt and Farwell. They
aren’t as strong as they’ve
been in the past,” said
Ropes head coach Tom
Ham. “They do have
some strong points
though. They have more
kids to draw upon and
they’ve got a real strong
sense of tradition and that
tradition can be a real big
k factor. We haven’t beat
them in the past three
yetits but we’re going
ready to play and ready to
win.”

Two key Eagle players
will be out for an unknown
length of time due to
injuries. Starting quarter-
back Mitchell Satterwhite
suffered a broken arm
during a practice Sept. 5,
and tailback Tony Torrez
broke his collarbone in the
season’s first scrimmage.
Reserve quarterback
Chad Rainwater took a
shot to the ribs in last
Friday’s match against
Seagraves, but is expect-
ed to start against the
Cowboys. Shannon Means
has been pulled from half-
back to fill the tailback
position.
‘‘Even though we ex-

tailback we had expected
Torrez to be an outstand-

to his experience),”* Ham
said.
‘‘We’ve been going

"We will have to cut
down on the mistakes,”
he commented. ‘‘We
have not played that well
although we are pleased
with the wins.”
Against Ralls the
Roughnecks had 150
yards • in penalties, but
still managed to put 26
points on the board. Brad
Davis got things rolling in
the first quarter with a
one yard plunge to put
the Roughnecks ahead
6-0.
The rest of the first
half Sundown continued
to move the ball, but the
penalties hurt any further
scoring efforts. Jamie
Villareal took a shot at a
50 yard field goal in the
first half, but the ball hit
the upright and bounced
away.
Aided by Sundown
penalties Ralls scored
just before halftime to tie
the score at 6-all. Villa-
real blocked the extra
point attempt and then
returned the ensueing
kickoff 35 yards to give
Sundown one more shot
at scoring. However, that
opportunity was lost as
time elapsed a few
seconds later.
Kenny Whitaker put
Sundown ahead to stay
during the third period.
He picked off a Ralls pass
and returned it 70 yards
for a touchdown.
“That was the play of
the game as far as we
were conce rned,’ ’
Motheral said. “From
then on we dominated
the game.”
Andy Emory scored
later in the third quarter
and Villareal kicked his
second extra point for a
20-6 lead. Emory then
put the icing on the win
on a 10 yard touchdown
run in the final quarter.
Emory was the
Roughnecks leading scor-
er with 75 yards on 15
carriers. Rocky Boaz
added 65 yards on only
seven carriers and Davis
accounted for 60 on 12 of 16 passes for 11 yards,

But the kids have a good
attitude this week. Due to
the injuries we’ve had to
make some changes and
replacements but I think
we are ready to come into
our own as a team.
Ham explained that
some of the problems
incurred at last week’s
game with Seagraves
werirtpmpounded by the
Rop^mome com ing.
‘‘We had a lot of
distractions last week and
the kids just didn’t have
enough intensity, ’ ’ said
Ham. ‘‘That'S bhe'bf the
reasons we had ^il (the

Now we’ve got it out of

game is our last before
