Grandparents honored by children on special day
LEADING THE PLEDGE-Harley Stanley led the pledge of allegiance during a visit to his
grandson’s third grade class at West Elementary Wednesday. Russell, Stanley's grandson, faced
him during the pledge, and student Armando Lopez stood beside him. Peggy Crandell, another

Seniors share experiences with third graders at West Elementary
Grandparents were honored
Wednesday by members of
Jackie Dycus’ third grade class
at West Elementary.
Grandparents of the stu-
dents were invited to eat lunch
with their grandchildren in the
school cafeteria and visit the
classroom, several grandpar-
ents participated in reading
stories to the children, testing
the students’ math skills with
flash cards and leading the class
in the pledge of allegiance to the
flag.
"We wanted to honor the
grandparents because they are
so special to the kids,” said
Dycus. She chose this time to
remember grandparents in
recognition of National Grand-
parents Day, today (Sunday).
Class members and some of
their grandparents took time to
write their thoughts about their
relationships, and the News-
Press offers these statements to
our readers to commemorate
Grandparents Day.
My Grandparents are nice.
They take me to get an ice
cream at the Dairy Queen. My
Grandpa takes me with him
sometimes to McDonald's to get
something to eat. I think my
Grandparents are nice,
Tanji Crandell
My Grandpa’s name is Joe.
He takes me to McDonald’s. He
is nice. He came to our house
and he slept for four days. I
make his life miserable. He
takes me to Big Spring with
him.
Albino Barrera
I call my Grandparents Nan-
ny and Papa. They have three
blocks down from my t\ouse. I
go to their house nearly every
day after school. I spend the
night with them a lot. Nearly
every time I eat over there, my
Nanny goes and buys chicken.
My Papa calls me Knucklehead.
My Nanny and Papa are fun to
be around. My Nanny and
Papa’s last> name is Otto
Wright. They are kinda old.

She’s 75 and he is 80. Papa and I
kid a lot and I say he'is mean,
but he’s not. She has a lot of
diamonds and pearls. He was a
carpenter, but now he’s retired.
These are not my-real Grandpar-
ents. I just adopted them. I love
my Nanny and Papa very much,

My Grandparents are so
nice. When 1 stay with them, we
go walking. They live by a little
■ park and we have fun. Their
names are B.G. and Gavina
Dominguez. My Grandma has
black hair and a very pretty
face. Even though shp’s old, she
still wears makeup. My Grand-
father picks a bunch of vegeta-
bles from the back yard. They
try to spare money to buy us
toys. I’m glad they are my
grandparents. Whenever I’m
with them, I feel loved.

My Grandfather is very
special to me. He lets me go
with him to the cafe some. He
buys me a cup of Coke. Then we
go to the oil v/ell to check it. HTs
name is Harley Stanley. My
Grandmother is very special to
me. She works as a Mary Kay.
She lets me watch TV. I get to
spend the night with them.
My Grandparents let me
spend the night with them. I
play with them. We eat ice
cream together. We play togeth-
er. She sews little holes in my
clothes. Her najne is Mi Mi. My
Grandfather is a farmer. His
name is Bob.

My Grandparents are nice.
They give me cake and candy
and clothes. They gave me a
them a lot.

My Grandparents are nice.
They let me watch movies at
their house. I can watch any-
thing I can. My Grandparents
live in Levelland. They are nice.
They invite us to eat at their
house. My Granddad is big and
he has gray hair. He is old. My
Grandmom is tall and has gray
hair too. She is' pretty. Her
name is Mary. I don’t know my
Grandpa’s name. •

One night I went to my
Grandma’s and Grandpa’s
house. They have a beautiful
house. They added another
room. It was my playhouse until
I moved away. My Grandma and
Grandpa are the,nicest grandma
and grandpa I ever had. My
Grandma makes me the best
banana pudding and my Grand-
pa makes me nice things like the
playhouse. I feel happy around
my Grandma and Grandpa.

My Grandpa took me out to
the lease in Amoco and we had
fun. We checked the oil wells.
He is tall and skinny. He has a
mustache. His name is Arlanda.
He is very funny. My Grandma
took me out to her beauty shop
and I watched her cut hair. She
is old and has blonde hair. She
is tall and her name is Johnnie.
She is very pretty. She is going
to take me to Wet and Wild in
Lubbock. I am glad<they are my
grandparents. I think they are
very nice.

My Grandma buys me
clothes. I love my Grandma. I
think of her as my mom. She
buys me things or sometimes I
go to the store for her. She is
nice to me. I hope my Grandpa
gets well. I love him. He is the
nicest one of all. We sometimes
play together. My Grandma has
black hair with gray and black
eyes. My Grandpa has brown
hair and gray. His eyes are
brown. Thejr names are Maria
and Mike.

My Grandparents take me to
Lubbock to Pistol Pete’s Pizza
and I ride the merry-go-round
and the skiball. I went to their
wedding and drank punch and
threw rice. I had fun. Their
names are Ophelia and A.D.
Vasquez. I love them very
much.

Armando Lopez
All the time. Grandpa gave
me cheese and crackers. Then
one day he went to the hospital
because he had cancer. Then he
got out for one month. He went
back to the hospital. One day a
nurse took him for a walk in a ,
wheelchair. He looked out the
window. Twelve days later, he
died. 1 loved him very much. I
will never forget him as lopg as I
live.

My two Grandmas are nam-
ed Juanita and Juanita. I have a
Grandpa too. They are special to
me. My Grandma sews for me.
The other Grandma works and
makes me responsible by help-
ing me. $he works at United.
My Grandpa works at taking
things out-and in machines. He
gives me toys. All three I love
because they are my Grandpar-
ents They are really nice. My
Grandpa is handsome and my
Grandmas are pretty.
