Smyer aldermen • voted in
their meeting Thursday to delay
setting the city tax rate until
they could study the budget The aldermen also opened
further. three bids for garbage disposal
The aldermen quizzed May- service but did not act on them,

sewer bond payments, but he traded for the service,
was unable to answer their
questions. They decided to wait
until city secretary Cathy Armes
could attend a meeting and
answer their questions. Armes

night’s meeting because of a

The current tax rate is 31.-
362 cents per $100 valuation of
property, and the city's valua-
tion of taxable property stands
at $3,503,910. Tax experts who
provided the city with the valua-
tion report estimated 75 percent
of the taxes would be collected:
however, Alderman Randy
Gholson said Armes had told
him recently that tax collections
were nearing 100 percent. The
proposed budget for the 1988-89
fiscal year is $15,889.
The aldermen also agreed to
approach ordinances a few at a
time. The city attorney, Harvey
Morton, had prepared standard
ordinances for animal control,
weed control, garbage disposal
and building codes and the
aldermen are studying them.
They agreed to discuss the ani-
mal control and garbage dispos-
al ordinances at next month’s
meeting.
Aldermen Gholson, Mary
Beth Sims and Harlan White
questioned the mayor concern-
ing payments of the sewer bond.
After studying a budget, they
determined that yearly expen-
ses of running the sewer com-
bined with the bond payments
totaled $40,000. However, reve-
nues generated by. the sewer
collections totaled $25,280.
“We’ve been robbing Peter
to pay Paul. We used the $40,-
000 we "borrowed from the gov-
ernment (that was not paid to
the sewer contractor when he
walked off the job) to pay the
bond payment. We figured
once we’d have to double the
sewer charge to makefile pay-
ments. That puts it at $36. If we
do that, you won’t get it from
me. I’ll dump in the back yard
first,” Thompson said.
Aldermen considered a let-
ter from the sewer contractor’s
attorney and agreed to meet
with their attorney concerning
the matter. Thompson said the
contractor’s attorney would set-
tle out of court if the'city would
pay the contractor $5,000.
”1 figure they owe us $100,-
000 to $125,000 for finishing the
project, loss of revenue and law-
yer’s fees. We’ve got the docu-
mentation. You may have to
give them 840,000, but that still
