Gas heater ignites
chair in bedroom
Lisa Skillern, a senior at Level-
land High School, is the recipient
of a Texas A&M University
Scholarship.
Deputy
arrests
two men
Two men from an area several
miles north of Levelland reported
thefts to the sheriff’s office this week.
Bill Graf told a deputy that $60
worth of irrigation pipe was taken
from that location during the week of
April 5, and W. R. Methvin of 206
Detroit notified a deputy that
someone stole two batteries from well
sites near the same location. The
batteries were valued at$62.50each,
according to official records.
A deputy arrested two men for drag
racing on Rodeo Ground Road at 5:15
p.m. Tuesday.The men are Raymond
Smith, 36, and Willie B. Jones. 25,
official records stated.
The President’s Achievement
Award is in the amount of $10,000.
Beginning with the fall semester of
1989 the scholarship will be for
four years of undergraduate work.
Lisa is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Troy Skillern. She is a mem-
ber of the National Honor Society,
a cheerleader and a member of
STUDS. She played basketball
and was homecoming queen.

A gas heater ignited a chair in the
bedroom of El vin Leaks at 412 Avc.
K just after noon Thursday, according
to fire department records.
Firemen arrived at 12:47 p.m. and
saw heavy smoke boiling from a
bedroom window. The firemen
donned airpacks, crawled into the
house and put out the fire. No estimate
of the damage was included in the
official report.
Mrs. Randy Cox called the fire
Thursday tosay that her trailer house
was in danger of catching fire. She
and her husband were burning a bam
and the wind changed, driving heat
and smoke in the direction of their
home. They had notified the fire
department earlier that they would be
burning the bam about 3.5 miles
southwestof Levelland. The firemen
arrived within a few minutes and put
out the fire, according to official
records.

Services for Jewell Glenn, 74,
were at 11 a.m. Saturday in the
Fifth Street Baptist Church with
the Rev. Merle Fulmer, pastor, the
Rev. Nolan Sumner, of Carrollton
and the Rev. Larry Haynes, pastor
of the Lubbock Southwest Baptist
Church, officiating.
Burial was in die City of Level-
land Cemetery under the direction
of George C. Price Funeral Direc-
tors.
She died at 9:55 a.m. Wednes-
day in Methodist Hospital in Lub-
bock following a brief illness.
She was born in Grandficld,
Okla. She moved to Levelland in
1928 from Southland. She married
Roy (Bill) Cunningham on July 26,
1935 at Levelland. He preceded
her in death on Feb. 8, 1968. She
married Fulton Glenn on Jan. 7,
1970 in Amherst. She was a mem-
ber of the Fifth Street Baptist
Church and was a homemaker. She
was a member of the Farm Home
Demonstration Club and the
l Oklahoma Flats Community Cen-
I ter.
Survivors include her husband;
| a daughter, Jennifer Cleveland of
Honor roll

, The South Plains Christian
Academy principal released a list
of the third quarter honor roll
students this week.
They are Stacey Grant, Brian
Grant, Maylena Willard, Kimber-
lee Stephens, Jacqui Streety,
Elizabeth Ersland and Cory Elrod.
Lubbock; three step-sons, Weldon
Glenn, Donald Glenn and Melvin
Glenn of Ropesville; a step-daugh-
ter, Carolyn Boyd; four sisters,
Verna Braswell of Pomona, Calif.,
Leatrice Wooten of Portales, N.M.,
Veda Duncan and Bobbie Spur-
geon, both of Ira; four grandchil-
dren; 13 step-grandchildren; and
one step-great-grandson.
The pallbearers were David Roy
Cleveland, Sammy Kirk Cleve-
land, Wesley Boyd, Kevin Glenn,
Kyle Glenn, Calvin Glenn, Coby
Glenn, Gary Glenn and Terry
Glenn.
