In one respect the
Lobos already have had a
successful football
season
three ---------
constitute a majority of
10, but that’s three more
than the Lobos won last
year. And each one of the
triumphs was an up-hill,
rugged battle. The team
and the town should be
proud of almost every
game. Of course the
Brownfield and Seminole
contests seemed to be
lost causes even before
they were played.
Losing to Andrews in
the opener was more like
a victory in this neck of
the woods. It marked a
return of enthusiastic
football. The loss to
Tahoka was a matter of
one team being more
mentally and physically
ready, and the game at
least hung in the balance
to the end. Losing it
should have helped
Levelland discover the
difference that desire
makes.
1 don’t mean to sound
as if the season is over,
but I do know Levelland
has come to the
crossroads. When it
meets Perryton
Saturday, there’s going
to have to be more put
lie* that game than into
any the Lobos have
played. Perryton had an
open date Friday, and
everyone will be healthy.
The Rangers are “up”
from having beaten
Tucumcari 71-0 the week
before, and lest anyone
forgets, Perryton and
College
Conference opponents.
NMJC turned in a 287
determined brand of team score, while
football. If Levelland Odessa College came in
could learn to hit like at 291. Western Texas
Tahoka hit them, I was third at 294
woulcki’t hesitate to call followed by Howard
the Lobos an inspiring
football team. But the
Lobos continue to play
without the spirit of
aggression, the inner
storm, the fiery desire
that separates real
football players from
‘ ‘Johnny Come
Latelies.”
For those who have
Levelland romping
through this district, I
think you’ve been bitten
by the fantasy bug.
Perryton, with its big,
talented, aggressive
football team is no
illusion. And it’s go
take more than .
dream romanticism to
on the same field
i them.
I agree that winning
district is a beautiful
thought But so is it a
beautiful thought to
Perryton, and Muleshoe,
and Dumas. It’s good for
the Lobos to think
winning district can be
done; everyone needs a
fairytale to believe in,*
and occasionally,
fairytales do come true.

Plains at 299, Amarillo
College at 300 and New

Carlos Najero of
NMJC led all golfers
with a five-under-par 67.
Jan MacDonald of
Amarillo was just one
shot behind at 68. Other
golfers under par for the
day were Gary Travis of
South Plains and Mike
Barge of Odessa with
69s, Glenn Smith with 70
and James Black of
NMJC with 71.
After two conference
meets, Odessa holds a
one point lead over
Western Texas. Odessa
has 14 and one-half points
to 13 and a half for WT.
NMJC sits in third place
with 11 and a half points,
Howard County in fourth
with 11 and Amarillo is
fifth with eight. South
Plains has seven and a
half points, NMMI has
four and Frank Phillips
College, which did not
enter last Saturday’s
meet, has two points.
