In most athletic contests, the one
who wins is almost always in
superior condition. That person, as
an individual or team member,
doesn’t just happen upon “getting
in shape.’’ Conditioning comes as a
result of hard, dedicated work.
Moreover, it is wrought through
self-discipline, a mental toughness
that causes that person to “be up
and doing.”
Too many athletes fool
themselves by not training in off
season. They believe they can wait
a couple of weeks before their sport
begins and then start working out.
Such is not the case. For example,
when a young m-n shows up for
football workouts in poor
condition, he is jeopardizing his
team’s chances. His timing and
reactions will be off, and he will
cause the team’s timing to suffer.
Such delay can lose the season
opener.
1 talked this week with Coach
Gene Mayfield. I asked him if he
knew of any Lobos who are
working out He said that a good
number were tking part in the city
recreation program. (Anyone who
wishes can participate in
volleyball, basketball, or work on
the trampoline from 9-12 in the
morning at the middle school gym.
The weight room at the field house
is also open from 5-9 in the
evenings.)
Coach Mayfield mentioned that
more Lobos are taking advantage
of the program than ever before.
He said, “I hope that’s a good sign.”
Through the grapevine, I had
heard about a conditioning
procedure that Coach Mayfield
and his staff will further
implement, and 1 asked the coach
about it.
It involves running down hill. So
a hill now exists near the compress
built for that specific purpose.
Coach Mayfield explained the
principle, telling me that Russian
sprinters are learning to run faster
by running down hill, where one
naturally runs faster than on level
ground. The theory being that the
runner’s muscles and reflexes
adjust to the greater speed and built
it into the system. The coach also
mentioned that some runners are
being pulled with an elastic rope,
forcing them to run faster than they
otherwise could.
Coach Mayfield chuckled, “I
don’t know if it works, but we
coaches will try anything.” I’m
with the coach. Personally, I’ve
always liked the idea of getting
more out of a person than they
thought they had in them.
