After a weekend fill-
ed with criminal activity,
Levelland police officers
faced a relatively slow
week highlighted by a
search for a kidnapping
victim (see page one).
Other activity reported
this week includes a
theft, a forgery, criminal
mischief and harrass-
ment.
Randy Evans of 108
Dogwood reported the
theft of three men’s rings
from a public restroom in
the Texas American
Bank building, where he
is employed as an assist-
ant vice-president. Evans
told police that he had
taken his rings off in the
restroom around noon
Monday to wash his
hands before he went to
lunch, and he forgot them
in the wash basin when
he left. He said he notic-
ed that the rings were not
on his hands when he
returned from lunch, but
when he checked in the
restroom, they were
gone. Evans said he
checked with several
bank employees to verify
if the rings had been
found and turned in, but
they had not.
The rings were de-
scribed as a 14-karat
gold nugget ring valued
at $495, a 14-karat gold
ring with a tiger’s eye
stone and two diamonds
valued at $665 and a
14-karat gold ring with a
1.07-karat diamond in
the center valued at
$3,100.
Jim Dandy Foods re-
ceived a forged payroll
check in January, accor-
ding to Mary Saunders,
an employee of the store.
Saunders reported the
incident Tuesday after
she received the check
from the bank stamped
“forgery”. She told pol-
ice that the $79.30 check
from the account of M
and B Roustabout Ser-
vice Inc. and made out to
David Lozamo Zubio had
b$en presented for cash
Jan. 6. Saunders said the
only description that the
two store employees who
cashed the check were
able to supply was that
the suspect was a Span-
ish male.
Bruce Scoggins of Rt.
3 Box 118 reported an
act of criminal mischief to
a piece of rental property
he owns at 105 Jackson.
Scoggins said the tenants
of the residence had tele-
phoned him Tuesday to
report that the back door
to the residence had
been damaged Monday
night as if someone had
attempted to break in but
had been unable to. The
tenant reportedly told
Scoggins that the brass
door lock was very loose
and the wood around the
knob was busted. Noth-
ing was found missing
inside the house.
Two subjects were ar-
rested for driving while
intoxicated and public in-
toxication around 11:40
p.m. Tuesday after they
were stopped 'in their
vehicle in the 800 block
of E. Highway 114 while
intoxicated. Officers re-
portedly checked with
both subjects to ascertain
if the vehicle could be
released to either one of
them, but both appeared
to be too intoxicated to
drive safely and both
were arrested.
Abandoned trailers may be connected to ring
A cattle trailer and a
flat bed trailer which
were found abandoned in
Arnett this week may be
connected to a theft ring
which the Department of
Public Safety has been
investigating for some
time.
The cattle trailer, val-
ued at $22,000, has been

January weather temperate
despite mid-month cold spell
definitely identified as
having been stolen out of
San Angelo. The license
plates and most of the
registration markings
had been removed from
the flat bed, but officials
believe it, too, may have
been stolen.
Gene Marrow, Hock-
ley County deputy who
assisted the DPS in inves-
tigating the trailers which
were found in Amett,
said that the DPS has
already made an arrest
in the case, but officials
believe that more people
may be involved.
The DPS located the
vehicles after they re-
ceived a phone call that
the vehicles were parked
in Amett at the Amett
Co-Op Gin. Gin officials
told the investigators
that they did not know
the men who left the
trailers parked there.
Marrow said that so
far no Hockley County
residents have been im-
plicated in the thefts.

Besides a brief cold
spell with accompanying
ice and snow around the
middle of the month,
January weather was un-
expectedly temperate
with an average high of
51 degrees and the aver-
age low hitting at 22
degrees.
Snow flurries and ice
and snow on the ground
diying the mid part of the
month created blistery
cold conditions, however,
with both the coldest
days of the month coming
during that period.
Two days in a row, on
the 17th and 18th, the
overnight low dropped to
five degrees and the
lowest high temperatures
for the month also came
during that week on Jan.
18 when the mercury
only reached 19 degrees.
The snows, though,
range.
The highest over-
night low was a reading
of 33 degrees on the
second day of the month.
The high temperature
for the month was 70
