John Jurek Sr.
We regret to chronicle the
death of one of our oldest citizens
John Jurek Sr. who passed away
at the home of his son, Frank
Jurek, at Hallettsville on April
8th. Deceased was born in Mora-
via, Europe, 75 years ago. He
came to America almost 50 years
ago, coming over on the same
boat with the father of Rev. L.
P. Netardus. He located first at
HaHetteyilleandthenon his farm
& few miles from Shiner, where
he lived for 35 years.
He was married to Mrs. Agnes
Pustka—Ermis 49 years ago. To
this union were born 3 sons,
John Jr., Frank and Joe. The
latter died 6 years ago. His wife
preceded him to the grave 30
years ago. There also survive
one step son Pete Ermis of Sweet
Home and a step daughter, Mrs.
JClara Williams, of San Antonio,
also 5 grandchildren. He had
been ill since January. For years
he has made his home with his
two sons, diYldmg his time be-
tween them. Requiem High Mass
was held at Sacred Heart Church
at Hallettsville by Father Mathis.
The remains were accompanied
to Shiner by a large concourse
of sorrowing friends and relati-
ves and burial took place in the
Shiner Catholic Cemetery, Father
Netardus officiating. The follow-
ing served as pall bearers: Chas.
Strauss, F. Rother, T. J. Pesek,
Alois Pustka, Brank Baros Sr.
and Frank Baros Jr. To those
who mourn his loss, we offer our
heartfelt sympathy.

The funeral of Mrs. JoeMatus
occurred Friday from the Catholic
church with Rev. L. P. Netardus
conducting the religious services.
She was born in Czechoslavakia
over 51 years ago, coming to Am-
erica with her family at the age
of 2 years, having s^ent all her
life in Lavaca County with the
exception of a few years in Gon-
zales county. She passed away
April 10th about ten o’clock, fol-
lowing an illness of some duration"
Left to mourn her loss are her
husband, two sons John and Emil
and one daughter, Mrs. Anna
Petru. Her aged mother, Mrs,
Anna Uhlar, is also left and
three sisters- Mrs. A. Novak of
Danbury, Mrs. Tom Bailey of
Dilworth and Mrs. R. Braun of
Shiner and one brother John
Uhlar of Yorktown are left to
mourn her loss. One brother pre-
ceded her to'the grave about 12
years ago. The pall bearers were
JohnDornak, Willie Boehm, Frk
Hanzelka, Alfons Grill, John
Caka and Jim Zissa. To the be-
reaved the Gazette offers sincere
sympathy.
