PVT. EUGENE SLANINA
WRITES FROM SOMEWHERE
IN PANAY
The following is a letter re-
ceived by Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Slanina of Houston from their
son Pvt. Eugene Slanina, who
at present is somewhere in
Panay. He was inducted into the
service December 15, 1944 and
received his training at Camp
Fannin, Texas, and went over-
seas in May 1945.
Dear Mother, Dad and Sister:
How are all of you. Hope
fine, as I am doing pretty well.
I am in the hospital somewhere
in Panay. I hope that I will be
able to leave the hospital soon.
It gets tiresome laying around
day after day.
It is raining here as usual
and the sun hardly ever comes
out. The mud here is just like
gum because it really does
stick to shoes.
Mother we get pretty good
chow, but it isn’t half as good
as the food you cook . I have
lost quite a bit of weight but
hope to gain it back soon.
I really do miss my friends,
but I hope it won’t be too long
before I can seen them. When-
ever you see any of them tell
them hello. I guess since school
is out most of the kids are vis-
iting and some are working.
Are there .very many of the
graduates going to college.
I haven’t received any mail
for about two weeks now, but
I guess I will get a lot at one
time. It really does make me
feel good to get mail from
home and my friends.
Some of the people around
here are very nice, although
they are different from us in
many ways.
Please don’t worry and I will
write you when I can.
Your son and brother,
Gene

Bill is just a name that stands for the 1,129 employees of the United Companies who are
serving in the nation’s armed forces. And scenes like the one above are being enacted in our
plants and offices, from North Texas to the border. They will go on being enacted,
until the last employee has returned....
Innocently, these home-coming ex-service men and women are putting the test to American
industry. It is a test that will show whether our free enterprise system can provide the
returnees with jobs... not jobs made by releasing other employees who have carried on
on the home front, but additional jobs!
JYe believe that American industry will pass that test. We know that we will!
