PHONE NO. 69
One of Lavaca county’s oldest
citizens passed on last week at
the advanced age of 81 years, 3
months and 27 days. Mr. Stefka
was born in Lipa, Moravia in
1846. It was there that he met
and married Rosie Kubiii who
preceded him to the grave 4
years ago.
In 1873 the family came to
America, settling in Austin co-
unty- After five years they mov-
ed to Fayette county and in 1890
moved in the Shiner community.
Six children were born to this
home. One son who died in in-
fancy and a daughter, Mrs.
Theresa Motl, who died 2 years
ago.
The surviving children are 4
sons Frank. Chas. and Henry of
Shiner and Joe of George West.
Mr. Stef ka was the last of his
family, his brothers and sisters
in the old country having pre-
ceded hint to the grave. The fu-
neral occured from the home of
Chas Stefka, Friday afternoon,
Feb. 17th, at 1 o’clock with
burial in the Evangelistic Breth-
em Cemetery near Vlastenic.
Services were conducted by Rev
Motycka of Belleville. The Ga-
zette extends sympathy to be-
reaved.

Mrs. Frank Macha, 1028 North arm
Sixteenth street, Monday night, lows as an aftermath of an ac-
fihe was speaking to her husband cjdent many weeks ago while in
Sergeant Breguglia of Rich field
who had just bid six on clubs in
abridge game after Macha had
bid three on spades.
Macha was playing witn Mrs.
Breguglia against his wife and j
the sergeant. *
In spite of his wild bidding,
Breguglia probably thought he
was going to get a double out of
Macha, but the bid went around
without a double appearing.
“That’s exactly what I,ve got.”
said Breguglia, answering his
wife’s suggestion when the bid
returned to him.
He actually held 13 trumps and
he had not been so overcome
with excitement as to give away
his hand despite the fact it was
appropos of the thrill that comes
once in a lifetime.
Post Mortem
If Breguglia had followed Ma-
cha’s three-spade bid with a bid
of four clubs instead of six of
them to begin with, the possibili-
ties of his hand would not have
been rendered so obvious, Macha
would probably have gone four
spades on his hand.
Breguglia could have bid five
clubs, and it is very likely that
either Macha or his partner would
have doubled Breguglia’s bid on
the strength of outside tricks.
Had this transpired, Breguglia
after having redoubled, would
have reaped i real harvest of
extra scores
