4.0 Detailed Definition of Alternatives
4.5.5 Operations and Technology
The LRT Alternatives would operate similar to the existing and planned LRT system. LRT
Alternatives would operate on 10-minute peak headways, with a 20-minute off-peak schedule.
The DART Starter System operates from 5:30 am to 12:30 am.
The operating concept is to operate two lines from downtown Dallas, one which will continue
north into Carrollton, and one of which would turn west at the Maiana Spur or UD/Texas
Stadium alignment option, continuing through Irving and possibly to DFW Airport. The LRT
lines would share a common alignment south of where the Irving line would diverge. This
operating scenario would result in an effective 5-minute peak and 10-minute off-peak headway
on the common segment south of this point. Movements between Carrollton/Farmers Branch
area and Irving would have to transfer at a station common to both lines (ie. Northwest
Highway for Maiana, Mockingbird for UD/Texas Stadium).
For the purpose of the detailed evaluation, the LRT Alternatives are assumed to terminate at the
Pearl Street Station. Interlining possibilities are discussed in the trade-off analysis of Chapter 6.
Interlining the trains would require them to travel through the downtown transitway mall. The
capacity of the transitway mall in the Dallas CBD is currently being examined by DART. That
investigation will address in part, capacity issues within the transitway mall. The issue of
capacity relates directly to the number of trains that the transitway mall can accommodate
without exceeding the minimum headway threshold of 2.5 minutes as established by the City of
Dallas for traffic impacts. If thresholds are exceeded, alternative operating plans, TSM, small
scale capital improvements, or a downtown subway will be examined.
Technology
The Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) would be identical to those being used for the existing LRT
Starter System. The LRVs are electrically driven, using a Direct Current power source of 750
volts.
Power is supplied through an overhead catenary system. Electricity would be supplied by the
Texas Utilities Electric Company (TXU). In order to convert the power to the 750 volts D.C.
needed, substations would be provided at approximately one mile intervals. These facilities
would have switch gear and other electric components, and must be housed in a same structure.
Typical substation size is 30 by 30 feet.
Loading Standards
Loading standards would be consistent with those of the Starter System. Vehicle person
capacity of the DART light rail vehicles used on the Starter System is 76 seated and 152 seated
and standing. The fares for LRT service in the Northwest Corridor would be consistent with
