3.0 Alternatives Considered
implementation. This CMS baseline is included in the No-Build Alternative. Additional, TSM
and TDM strategies were developed to form a TSM Alternative.
Major Transportation Investment Elements
Major investment elements and technologies considered in this step of the process included:
* Roadway Improvements - High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) and/or general purpose
lanes.
" Light Rail Transit - Rail service identical to that used for the DART LRT Starter System.
" Self-Propelled Commuter Rail - Rail service similar to the existing Trinity Railway
Express (TRE) commuter rail service.
* Self-Propelled Light Rail - Also known as new lightweight commuter rail diesel
multiple units (DMU), a new technology that is a hybrid between LRT and Commuter
Rail.
* Monorail Technology - Elevated rail transit that is fully grade separated.
* High Speed Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) Technology - Elevated rail transit technology
similar to Monorail, but that can travel at much higher speeds.
The development of roadway alternative elements continued throughout the evaluation process
to address issues identified by the Freeway Geometric and Operational Analysis and to define
the size of facilities to meet future travel demand. Thus, they were not subject to the
Alternatives Selection process until detailed travel demand forecasting could be conducted.
As shown above, five rail transit technologies were defined as part of the universe of
alternatives. Table 3.1 summarizes the characteristics of each of the technologies. This
information formed the basis for the evaluation of technologies.
3.2.2 Alignments
The definition of alignments for roadway improvements were coordinated with TxDOT
through the MIS Coordination Work Group. Given that several highway major investment
studies were ongoing in or bounding the study area, the Northwest Corridor roadway
improvement elements were defined to focus on the following facilities:
- SH114 from SH183 to SH121
- IH 35E from SH 183 to Loop 12 and from IH 635 to the SH 121 By-passNorthwest Corridor MIS 18
