3.0 Alternatives Considered
3.3 CONCEPTUAL ALTERNATIVES
The following sections summarize the conceptual alternatives and the results of the Conceptual
Evaluation.
3.3.1 Summary of Conceptual Alternatives
Based on the results of the Alternatives Selection step, a base alignment and several routing
options within defined decision areas were identified in fall 1998. Descriptions of the base
alignments and routing options by decision area are provided below.
LRT Alternatives
The continued development of LRT alternatives led to the definition of an additional route to
connect to the Irving/Las Colinas area, termed the Texas Stadium option. This option was not
identified in the Alternatives Selection phase. Figure 3-3 illustrates the base alignments and
routing option areas carried into the Conceptual Evaluation step for LRT. Figures 3-4 through
3-6 illustrate the routing options considered.
* A - North End/ Oak Lawn (Figure 3-4) - The base alignment in this routing option area
follows the existing RAILTRAN right-of-way used for the TRE commuter rail service.
DART and the Hillwood Team developed several other preliminary routing options during
the Houston Street right-of-way discussions in late 1998. These options are described in
detail in the Conceptual Definition of Alternatives and Conceptual Evaluation Results
Report (BRW, Inc.; March 1999).
* B - Market Center to Northwest Highway (Figure 3-4) - In addition to the UP RR base
alignment, two alternative routing options were identified:
- Harry Hines Boulevard
- Harry Hines/UP Combination
* C - Love Field Access (Figure 3-5) - The base UP option to serve Love Field would provide
for shuttle or bus service from the Mockingbird Station to and from the terminal. Two
additional options to serve Love Field were defined:
- Love Field Tunnel with terminal station
- Love Field People-Mover Spur
" D - Northwest Highway to LBJ Freeway (Figure 3-5) - As an option to the UP RR, Harry
Hines Boulevard was examined. This option would allow for more direct access and
potentially greater economic development opportunities for the Harry Hines corridor.
" E - North Irving/ Las Colinas Connector (Figure 3-6) - Two alternatives to the base
connector, which uses the Maiana Spur, were identified:
- Northwest Highway
- Texas Stadium
