4.0 Detailed Definition of Alternatives
4.3 HIGHWAY/ HOV ALTERNATIVES
This section describes the Highway Widening Alternatives and High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)
Lane Alternatives.
4.3.1 Overview of Service Concept
The following sections describe the service concept and proposed capital improvements
associated with each of the Highway Widening and HOV Alternatives. These alternatives were
developed to test their ability to meet travel demands. Based on the evaluation in Chapter 5.0
and the report Definition of Highway and HOV Concepts for the Northwest Corridor (BRW,
Inc.; July 2000), revised functional concepts were developed to be part of a multi-modal
investment strategy.
IH 35E HOV Alternative - Alternative 4A
Figure 4-3 illustrates the general improvements associated with the IH 35E HOV Alternative
(referred to as Alternative 4A). This alternative focuses on capacity improvements for multi-
occupant vehicles such as carpools, vanpools, and buses. This alternative supports trip
reduction programs and can help reduce SOV travel by providing travel time savings for
HOVs. Key improvements associated with this alternative are:
" SH 121 By-pass to IH635
- Add 2 HOV lanes in each direction
* IH 635 Interchange
- Provide directional ramps to/from north-to-east
" IH 635 to Loop 12/Northwest Highway
- Provide same number of lanes recommended by TXDOT Loop 12/IH 35E MIS
(2 HOV lanes in each direction plus ramp connection)
" Loop 12/Northwest Highway
- Provide continuous HOV lanes from TXDOT project to median of IH 35E
south of Northwest Highway (could require fly-over ramps depending upon
design concept from Loop 12 MIS)
* Northwest Highway to SH 183
- Provide 2 reversible HOV lanes
* SH 183/Trinity Parkway Interchange
- Provide direct fly-over ramps from IH 35E north of SH 183 to connect to SH
183/Lower Stemmons HOV lanes (space will be needed for reversible gate
operations)Northwest Corridor MIS 52
