4.0 Detailed Definition of Alternatives
4.4 COMMUTER RAIL ALTERNATIVES
This section describes the Commuter Rail Alternatives defined for the detailed evaluation. An
overview of the service concept, operations and technology assumptions, alignment
descriptions, target station locations, and supporting transit and capital improvements are also
described.
4.4.1 Overview of Service Concept
The Commuter Rail Alternatives would provide medium-haul service in the Northwest
Corridor, focusing on meeting commuter needs from northern suburbs to the Dallas CBD.
Service would also be provided to other major activity centers, including the Medical/Market
Center, Love Field Airport, and Las Colinas. The Commuter Rail Alternatives would begin at
Union Station in downtown Dallas and extend north into Carrollton, Farmers Branch, North
Irving, and possibly into Lewisville and Legacy Park. Feeder buses would provide service to
Commuter Rail Stations from adjacent neighborhoods and commercial areas. Station spacing
would range from 2 to 5 miles to reach higher speeds but also provide access to key activity
centers.
Commuter Rail alternatives would generally operate within existing railroad rights-of-way and
involve the construction of a new single track alongside the existing freight track. The existing
freight track would be upgraded to serve as a passing track, needed to maintain peak
headways.
4.4.2 Base Alternatives 6 and 7
For the purposes of the detailed evaluation, two base Commuter Rail Alternatives were defined.
These alternatives are described below.
Alternative 6 - Commuter Rail to SH 121 with Mariana
Alternative 6, shown in Figure 4-7 begins at Union Station and proceeds north along the UP RR
right-of-way to SH 121. Commuter rail shuttle service between the North Irving Transit Center
and the Walnut Hill/Mariana Station would be provided along the Maiana Spur.
Alternative 7 - Commuter Rail to Legacy Park with BN RR
Figure 4-8 illustrates Commuter Rail Alternative 7. This alternative would also begin at Union
Station in downtown Dallas and follow the UP RR. At Belt Line Road, the alignment would
continue northeasterly along the BN RR right-of-way to SH 121 in the Legacy Park area. As
part of this alternative, commuter rail shuttle service would be provided along the south
segment of the BN RR from the Trinity Railway Express station at the South Irving Transit
Center to the North Irving Transit Center.Northwest Corridor MIS 64
