To no one’s surprise,
attendance at the Comanche
County Pow Wow in the Park
was down a bit, but for those
who came, it was enjoyable.
(No doubt, the early forecast
for rain and high winds for
this area which of course
didn’t happen, as well as the
cost of gas and the hot
temperatures played a role in
fewer people coming out to
the Pow Wow.)
The weather was rather
warm, but there was an
abundance of ice cold water
and lemonade available,
homemade ice cream, and
snow cones to keep us cool.
We thought the craft and
food booths were exceptional
again this year. And you
haven’t lived until you’ve
eaten frozen chocolate-
covered cheesecake or a plate
of crispy curly fries!
Pow Wow volunteers who
worked the entrance gate
reported a number of families
from the Houston and
Galveston area who had fled
Hurricane Katrina and staying
in the area were welcomed
and, of course, admitted free!
One Galveston man we visited
with said that he had spent the
night in Goldthwaite, heard
about the Pow Wow, and
came over to kill sdme time
while he waits to be admitted
back into his hometown of
Galveston.
Thanks to all the Pow Wow
Committee and other
volunteers and supporters of
this festival. Of course, you
realize it wouldn’t happen
without you and your knowing
that it takes this kind of team
work.

Saturday afternoon at the
Pow Wow, a young boy,
maybe about 8 or 9 years old,
was walking by the Main
Street/Friends of Historic
Comanche Booth. He stopped
and was looking at the large
photo we had displayed of the
old Comanche Train Depot in
its present deteriorating state.
He said, “I live over there by
that ol’ building.” He paused a
bit, still looking at it and said,"
“What are you gonna do with
it? Tear it down?”
We told him we were going
to try to fix it up so that it
would be a “beautiful” place
again.
He smiled and asked, “Can I
go in it then?”
“Sure” we told him . .. and
then replied, “Can I get in
free?” “By all means!” we told
him.
He smiled at us and was on
his way again, and Ido believe
he thought it would be awfully
nice to have an beautiful
building in his neighborhood.
Speaking of the Depot . . .
there is discussion now about
tentative plans to have the roof
It’s time to plant
wildflowers and experts
recommend planting them just
before a rain! That may be
the haidest part! (Let’s think
“RAIN!”)
The wildflowers that are
best suited for our area, as
suggested by those in the
know, are Bluebonnet, Indian
Paintbrush, Coreopsis,
Winecup, Purple Cornflower,
Cosmos, Larkspur and Black-
eyed Susan. (If any of you
would recommend others, let
us know.) (Experts also say
that in order to get a good
stand of Bluebonnets, you
may have to plant several
years in a row.)

on his way to Nashville this
week. He has been nominated
for the Country Gospel Music

Our friend Kenneth Evans,
along with two or three of his
friends, Henry Adcock and
Preston Cox particularly, and
some generous donations from
others, have been instrumental
in restoring and cleaning up
some of our historical county
cemeteries. Most recently,
Kenneth and Henry have
installed a flagpole flying the
Stars and Stripes at the
Whitney Cemetery in
southeast Comanche County.
The Whitney is a beautiful
little cemetery. In one comer
of the cemetery there are four
graves marked with four large
stones thought to be the graves
Choctaw Indians. Other old,
beautiful gravestones found
along the little hillside and
live oak-shaded cemetery are
engraved with birth dates
going back to the 1870’s.

Letter to
the Editor
I am writing this letter in
hopes of getting some help
from parents, grandparents or
just anyone interested in the
Comanche Youth Council
sports programs.
We may take for granted
that everyone knows this is a
volunteer program. All board
members and coaches are vol-
unteers. They do not get paid
and they pay their kids regis-
tration fees just like everyone
else.
I feel like we have a very
good program. Other towns
even make positive comments
about our facilities and youth
programs.
However, it seems like it is
always the same few people
who do all the work. We have
a lot of people that like to sit
around and complain about all
kinds of things but won’t lift a
finger to help.
They want to complain
about a coach, not realizing or
caring that the coach is not only
resposible for coaching the
games and conducting prac-
tices, but he also has to umpire
games, help mow and weedeat
the fields, run or make sure the
concession stand is covered on
his teams assigned time, clean
restrooms, and anything else
that needs done, and still work
fulltime just like the majority of
us.
I was amazed at one maiffe
attitude a few weeks ago when
we were trying to get the soc-
cer and flag football fields
ready. He did show up to help,
but the fields had already been
mowed, and that was all he was
willing to do... sit on a mower..
so he left. There was plenty of
other things to be done. The
other few people that did show
up to work (thanks by the way)
started around 9:00 am and left
around 4:00 to 5:00 pm.
The only way the CYC will
continue to run is from the help
of volunteers. We need people
to mow, weedeat, fix fences,
fix sprinkler system, pick up
trash, clean restrooms and 100
other different things.
When you take your kids to
practice, see what you can do
to help. In that one hour or so,
you could make a difference.
You would be amazed at how
little time it would take if ev-
eryone would help out in some
area.
People are going to have to
jump in and help because the
only other way to get things
done is to hire people to do
these things and that means
going up on registration fees.
I coached the 10U Girls
team at the state tournament
in Red Oak this past summer
and had a chance to talk to sev-
eral other coaches and the tour-
nament director. They could
not believe how little we
charged for registration fees.
In Red Oak, the city took
care of everything, except
coaching, and each kid paid
$100 to play. CYC charged
$20-535 per child last year de-
pending on age level. How

Remember this organization
is here to provide a fun and
positive place for the youth of
the community to compete in
competive sports. Along with
learning the basics of their cho-
sen sport or sports, the exer-
cise they receive, and the team f
fellowship they recieve, it gives
them a positve activity to par-
ticipate in. j
What would they be doing
if they were not particating in»
CYC activities? Other than
church activities, and CYC, "
there is really not anything else
for kids to do in this commu-
nity. Do we want our kids run-
ning up and down the streets
getting into trouble, or piled on
the couch watching tv and play-
ing video games all the time?
Your help will make a dif-
ference.
In closing, I want to take a
minute to thank those of you
who do help in so many ways.
You are what is keeping this
organization going. Hopefully
we can get you some help!
Thank you,
Larry Stephenson _
