World's Fair visitors.
An intending visitor to the com-
ing World's Fair at Chicago need
have no fear as to the possibility of
securing satisfactory accommoda
tiouB at reasonable rates at either
of the many hotels or residences
listed in a neat pamphlet entitled
"Homes for Visitors to the World's
Fair" compiled at great expense
and published by a trustworthy
Chicago firm. ThiH book contains
a list of ubout 9000 private fami-
lies who will accommodate visitors
in Chicago during the time of the
Fair viz: May 1st to October 30th;
gives their names and addresses
and a number of rooms each will
have to spare. The book also gives
a list of the hotels and their loca-
tions; has twelve full-page large-
scale maps each representing a sec
tion of tho city so that with this
information before him the intend-
ing visitor can at leisure select the
quarter of the city in which he
would prefer to stop correspond-
ing in advance with one or more
families in that locality with re-
gard to rates and the accommoda-
tions desired.
To help you in fixing in advnnce
upon your place of residence while
attending the World's Fair we have
placed in the hands of our agent at
your station copies of this work
which may be obtained at 50 cents
per copy. W. H. Winfield

Mr. Cleveland's View of His Powers
and Duties.
From the l'lillndelpbla I.ulger.
Mr. Cleveland has a conscience
and he has a will. lie recogni.es
that his (unctions as executive if
they are to be intelligently and con-
siderately performed requires that
he shall devote much of iiis time to
consultations with his cibinet
otlicers and their principal assist-
ants to interviews with callers who
have interest in or knowledge of
important public questions to the
examination of his voluminous
correspondence and to study and
rttlect over the problems of govern-
ment which daily present them
selves. Here is an abundance of
hard woik. even if the filling of
places made no demand upon his
attention whatever.
Whila the respective state leaders
are in Washington wrangling over
tbe claims of preference of oilice
seekers Mr. Cleveland will doubt-
less continue in his philosophic
way to give impartial conBidennion
to their statements to weigh well
their arguments and to act as his
judgment and high sense of respon-
sibility dictate. And while the
President is not to be envied with
respect to thij burden it is well to
remember that the political leaders
have their own trials. There is
one way to help to Bonie extent
the President and the leaders it is
by the introduction of the merit
system into every oilice where it
will woik practically by the amend-
ment of the law so that it will more
adequately protect inoumbents and
by the elevation of public opinion
on the whole subject of the civil
service.
A Choice List or Bummer Resorts.
In the lake regions of Wisconsin
Northern Miohigan Minnesota
Iowa and the two Dakotas there
are hundreds of charming localities
preeminently fitted for summer
homes. Among the following se-
lected list are the names familiar to
many of our readers as the perfec-
tion of northern summer resorts.
Nearly all of tho Wisconsin points
of interest are within a short dis-
tance of Chicago or Milwaukee and
none of them are so far away from
the "busy marts of civilization"
that they cannot be reached in a few
hours travel by lrequent trains
over the finest roads in the North-
west the Chicago Milwaukee &
St. Paul railway and Milwaukee it

MR. GLADSTONE'S AXE
Will be Exhibited In the Forestry
Department.
Says a Sunday cable to the New
York Sun: "At the request of the
Timber Trades Association of the
United States sent through Frank
S Shurick of Mirietta O. Mr.
Henry White charge de'afl'airePjhas
obtained from Mr. Gladstone as a
gift and has forwarded to America
one of the axes used by the Premier
in felling trees at Ilawarden Cas-
tle. The ax is to be exhibited in
the forestry . departmont-. of the
World's Fair and ought to prove
a great attraction. It is a very tine
one sharp and heavy with the ash
handle well worn by the Grand Old
Man's frequent hearty grips. It is
understood by Mr. Gladstone that
at the close ot the exhibition the ax
will find a permanent home at the
headquarters of the Timber Trades
Association. As far as can be as-
certained he has never previously
parted with one of his axes and
Americans will therefore appreciate
the compliment the more."
