TRAINING - KEY TO HIGHER QUALITY
The success of quality improvement efforts
at GD/FW is the result of three thrusts:
involvement, awareness, and training. Put-
ting quality in the spotlight through arti-
cles, posters, video programs, and other
media has helped achieve the awareness
goal and promoted involvement. Employ-
ees of all ranks have responded to the need
for better quality and have become partici-
pants in the drive to build a better product,
efficiently and effectively.
Although awareness and involvement go a
long way in helping us achieve our goals,
intensive training is another important ele-
ment. All of us need additional education-
al exposure to broaden our performance
bases. But determining training and educa-
tional needs is not always easy. We need
to examine ourselves to see how we might
best attain self improvement. We need to
look realistically at our deficiencies to
determine what skills need sharpening, and
discuss those needs with coworkers, train-
ing specialists, and our supervisors. Only
then can we sensibly select the training
elements that will be most beneficial. Such
an approach can raise our individual and
collective quality levels.

RANDOM DESK CHECKS LIKELY
IN SECURITY INSPECTIONS
The Director of the Defense Investigative
Service, Thomas O'Brien, told attendees at
a recent seminar that random inspection of
desks belonging to cleared individuals may
be included in semiannual security inspec-
tions in the future. When possible, these
inspections will take place in the presence
of the employee concerned. If the employ-
ee is unavailable, the inspection will be
conducted in the presence of an Industrial
Security or other company representative.
The desk inspections will be instituted to
ensure that no classified material is im-
properly stored. The DIS inspector will not
be seeking any personal or company mate-
rial. The company has agreed to make the
entire facility available to inspection in
accordance with DIS directives, and em-
ployees, by accepting security clearances,
have agreed to abide by government regu-
lations concerning the protection of classi-
fied material, O'Brien said.
