More than 20 Baytown police
officers, coordinated by Sgt.
Byron Jones, participated in
Carver-Jones Elementary
School’s second annual “Adopt a
Cop” program.
i. Films were shown on different
‘ subjects including one about
child abuse and molesting. The
r film explained to the children
what to do and where to report
such crimes against them.
Police officer David Lay
entertained the students with his
imitations of Sesame Street
characters and had the kids
roaring with laughter at his im-
itation of the Pink Panther song.
The policemen ate lunch with
the students, letting them play
with their handcuffs and talking
and laughing, showing them
they were their friends and were
around to help them, not hurt
them.
Last year, school officials
recalled, a Baytown patrolman
was called to a disturbance near
the school on the day “Adopt a
Cop” observance was held. The
youngsters, on their way home
from school, spotted the police
car and gathered about the of-
ficer, asking for his autograph.
The policeman, unaware of the
school program, wondered why
he was getting all the attention.
For “Adopt a Cop,” students
take an oath to be worthy of the
said adoption.
The oath is to obey their
parents and teachers, obey the
law and policemen, never steal
and always tell the truth, never
hurt other people or their pro-
perty, stay away from drugs,
alcohol and cigarettes, eat right
and exercise, be kind to ,
policemen, be good citizens and
to report crimes to 427-TIPS.
Shirley Bynum, an art teacher
at the school, got the idea for the
program last y#6r and put it into
action.
Ms. Bynum is outgoing presi-
dent of the Carver Jones Parent-
Teacher Association.
