their investment to a business
manager. His only visible indulgence is
a black Porsche. “I never thought I
would end up with a Porsche,” he ad-
mits, “but it's fine; a nice machine.”
He has everything he wants, he
claims. His house in the steeper
reaches of Beverly Hills is so modest in
size that when the teenage sons of his
first marriage visit, the only place they
can practice basketball is out in the
street, a quiet cul-de-sac.
Inside, the house reflects the carpen-
try and construction skills that kept
Ford sane and fed for eight years
before Star Wars. Wood surfaces gleam.
Sash windows glide open at a touch.

Crafting furniture still satisfies him.
He sits at a pine dining room table he
made, a solid piece with beautiful lathe
work. Ford agrees that if his career
ever fell apart, he could always open a
furniture factory.
That seems unlikely, as long as In-
diana Jones can hold his own. “In
Temple of Doom you will see him do
things you wouldn’t have suspected,”
Ford remarks teasingly. In the first
saga, Jones, an archaeology professor
with a lethal bullwhip,[stubbly beard
and battered felt hat, succeeded in sav-
ing the Ark of the Covenant containing
the Ten Commandments, which had
fallen into the hands of pre-war Nazis.
The new film takes place two years
earlier. Jones is preoccupied with ob-
taining freedom for a band of slave
children, a quest that takes him from
the nightclubs of old Shanghai, where
he appears with James Bondian
elegance in a white tuxedo, to the Tem-
ple of Doom in India, via jungle, moun-
tains and an assortment of daredevil
escapades.
“The beauty of the first film was in
discovering Indy,” says Ford. “We can’t
repeat that because now we all know
who he is, so we’ve been obliged to
show more interesting sides of his
nature.”
Indy’s girlfriend in the prequel,
Willie, a nightclub singer portrayed by
Kate Capshaw, replaces the memorable
Marion, played by Karen Allen, who
could drink most men under the table.

empty. Indiana Jones flashes his foes a
crooked, helpless smile. Cut.
Yes, folks, it’s gung-ho, derring-do,
edge-of-the-seat cliffhanger time again.
This week sees the release of Indiana
Jones and the Temple of Doom, Para-
mount’s eagerly-awaited “prequel” to
Raiders of the Lost Ark. The silver
screen will be replete with chase
scenes, careening planes and cars, rat-
tling machine guns, treacherous mine
caverns, perilous rope bridges and sus-
penseful moments inside the sinister
Spike Chamber in the mysterious
Palace of Pankot. And once more,
America’s successor to the Saturday
matinee idols of yesteryear will be
played by Harrison Ford.
Nothing can quite prepare an inter-
viewer for just how bright Ford is.
Mumbling, yes. Laconic, definitely. But
sharp-witted, too. Above all, he is
determined to be the antithesis of a
movie star. You will not see him postur-
ing on talk shows, endorsing products,
or laboring on the Hollywood celebrity
treadmill.
“I want to be known as an actor, not
a star, if such a distinction is necessary,”
Ford says. “It’s much more fashionable
to be a star than an actor, but therefore
much more short-lived. Besides, l don’t
like to go to parties.
“The business of being a star and do-
ing what’s necessary to remain a star
— in other words, promoting yourself
as a fascinating personality
something I’m unable to do. 1 don’t
consider myself fascinating, nor do 1
have a star’s personality. 1 don’t see
myself as being unique. 1 just work in
the movie business.”
Maybe, but he knows how to behave
like a star when it comes to finances.
Ford has demanded a percentage of
the profits from his movies ever since
producer George Lucas gave him a
taste of money. For playing Han Solo,
the mercenary pilot of StaY Wars, Lucas
presented him — in addition to his
salary — with one-quarter of 1 percent
Of the studio’s world-record returns, a
bonus approaching $750,000.
Ford would neither confirm nor
deny a report that he received 7 per-
cent of the gross for Raiders three years
ago, but assuming the figure to be
roughly accurate, he earned in the
region of $10 million. To that add his
undisclosed percentage of The Empire
Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
So at 41, with the anticipated success
of Temple of Doom, he will have ap-
peared in and profited from five of the
biggest box-office blockbusters ever.
Prudent with his riches, he leaves
