The St-Louis Republican of

The St. Louis Globe Dcnio-
ctat makes the official an-
nouncement tha it is the duty
of all "good Republicans" to
help the Greenback movement
in Missouri for the sake of the
harm it will do the Democratic
party.
The G. D. is one of the lead
ing Republican papers in the
West and is high authority with
the faithful of that political
persuasion. The advice to all
"good Republicans" to help
the Greenbackers look as if the
Republicans as a party were
in full sympathy with the Grcea-v
backers or the .Greenbackers
are in full .sympathy with the
Republicans; it matters not
which way. it is; the fact is plain
that the two parties" are in ac-
cord and are willing to do any-
thing and everything to injure
and if possible bring about a
disruption in the ranks of the
Democracy. All good Demo-
crats will discover at once the
object of the Greenbackers or
as they are now pleased to call
themselves the Nationals. It
is just possible that the G. D.
did not intend to liberate the
male feline that 'was so snugly
bagged and having let the cat
out of the bag may perhaps
attempt to capture him again
and say it was all a mistake.
The finances of the country
are now in a better condition
than they have been fince the
issue of greenbacks by- the Government;-
After the severe
struggle the country ha passed
through in returning to a specie
basis would it uot be .well
enough to let the money ques-
tion alone. The Democracy
has always been a hard money
party and their point having
been carried there is nothing
more to be done. Confidence
once fully restored trade com-
merce and agriculture will soon
move along smoothly in its ac
customed channels and the peo-
ple will go to work with a will to
repair their shattered fortunes
which was brought about by an
inflated currency and .over-trading.
The "Blue Book" tells that
the total number of Federal office-holders
now feeding at the
public crib is 85880 truly a
noble and patriotic army. This
grand army is in the proportion
of 1 to 450 of the total popula-
tion or 1 to every 90 voters. It
has been figured down that if
there was but five applications
for each position and there
are usually many more this
would make'one in every eigh-
teen an officerseeker. The de-'
duction is that the average
American is not only willing
but exceedingly anxious to sac-
rifice himself for the public weal.
The fact is there are too many
offices. Counting all offices"
state municipal and federal
every ninth voter is an office-
seeker. Britton A. Hill a St Louis
lawyer seems to have of his own
volition taken the leadership of
the Greenbackers or Nationals
and who was in Texas not Jpng
ago making Greenback speech-
es now calls a covention of the
Missouri Nationals to meet at
Scdalia June 19th. A pledge
will be exacted of every one
participating in the convention
to divest himself of all fellow-
ship with or alliance to either
the Democratic or Republican
parties and to support the can-
didates nominated by the con-
vention. The Waco Examiner in an
article entitled "Hints to Chris-
tians" says the people won't go
to church and the chnrch can't
go to the people. The church
ignoring-the march of progress
and the cheapness with which
ideas can be promulgated and
a cause carried forward still
clings to the clumsy countri-
vanccs of five hundred years
ago and uses public speech to
little handfuls at a cost which
by use of the press would reach
every home in the land.
The Examiner fails to tell us
what would become of the
preachers who talk to the "lit-
tle handfuls' and also of the
churches.
The average Texas editor
and newspaper publisher will
not be muchly bothered about
paying income tax if-the above
limit be retained.

bered two thousand members.
The temperance star was shining
brightly and a straight Pro-
hibition ticket for the municipal
election was put on the track.
The Anti-Prohibitionists
elected their man by 357 major-
ity. The St. Louis Republican
remarks in this connection :
The friends of temperance
ought to know without such
unpleasant lighten the subject
that except in insolatcd locali-
ties and under peculiarly favor-
able circumstances prohibition
is impossible. A very large
proportion of nearly every com-
munity do not want and vill
not have stomach legislation.
They care very little how high
the licenses are put or the
means employed to collect
"them ; but they will not attempt
to abolish . liquor selling and
drinking altogether for the
simple reason that it cannot be
done.
Because the brigands have
successfully robbed trains in the
vicinitv of Dallas and the civil
authorties have been as unsuc-
cessful in their capture as die
brigands were successful in rob-
bing the Dallas Herald wants
somebody to blame and- not
caring to put the responsibil-
ity where it properly belongs
on the county officials it blame
Gov. Hubbard who is in reality
no more to blame for the train
robber'es than the editor of the
Herald.
Much interest is being mani-
fested by the people of this
county in the Gulf Colorado
and Santa Fe railroad. The
Banner has this week publish-
ed two communications both in
favor of the road but express-
ing the individual opinion of
the writers. The Banner in
publishing communications does
not in any case become respon-
sible for the views of its corres-
pondents. It makes this state-
ment frith a view to correcting
any false impression that some
few of its readers may have.
The Brazell murder case
has at last been brought to a
conclusion after having been on
trial in the district court at San
Antonio for several days. The
jury after an absencg of three
hours and a half returned a Ver-
dict of guilty of murder in the
first degree against the prison-
ers. Cox Ryan and Satterlee.
It will be remembered that Dr.
Brazell was assassinated at his
home in DeWitt county some
two years ago.
A distingushed lawyer is
quoted by the Austin States-
man as saying "That municipal
government in Texas as else-
where as conducted And man-
sged must either be destroyedor
municipal suffrage'restricted jto
tcxpaycrs." It may be remark-
ed that municipal governments
are a very expensive luxury and
all who are disposed to indulge
in luxuries must pay "dearly for
them.

The Dallas Commercial dis-
