I found great improvement
in the building of housesfences
etc. and an increased acreage
of lands in cultivation on the
entire route from Brenham to
this place. Our travel on the
trairi yesterday was very disa-
greeable -and dust)' until we
had nearly reached McKinney
when a fine rain greeted us and
ordered the dust to lay still.and
it did. The trip was a very pleas-
ant one in spite of all this ow-
ing to the kindness of the con-
ductor news-boy and porter
with pleasant and familiar faces
of the doctors and those of the
milder and better sex in all
just 'enough to make the trip
pleasant in spite of the dust.
The train makes much better
time on the main line than it
does on the Austin branch and
only stops long enough to say
howdy and good-bye and.it is
off again. Not a word of com-
plaint was uttered by any one
on the entire route except at
the Dallas supper which was sLx
bits two-bits too much.
The citizens here were bless-
ed with a fine rain last night
which was much needed being
the first for two months. Corn
is coming up but not a good
stand yet. The wheat crop is
said to be very fine. -
You could have no concep--tion
of the vast improvements
in the way of farming and resi-
dences that have taken place
between here and Brenham in
the last five years unless yon
had seen it with your own eyes
as I have.
