Elusive escapee nabbed
Good Samaritan robbed
HOUSTON — A man who escaped from die
Harris County Jail more than a month ago was
recaptured late Wednesday following a lengthy
search involving dozens of officers.
Michael Deondre Motte, 30, was arrested
about 11 p.m. Wednesday after eluding author-
ities from the Harris County Sheriffs Depart-
ment, Houston Police Department, die Harris
County Organized Crime/Narcotics Task Force
and the U.S. Customs Service for most of die
“Now, let’s see if they can keep him,” said
Baytown officer Ron Moser, who assisted in
the long search for the elusive escapee.
Motte had been awaiting trial on cocaine
charges when he allegedly bribed a Harris
County jailer with between $10,000 to $20,000
to free him April 19. He had been held on
bonds totaling $1.5 million.
Authorities began searching for Motte Wed-
nesday after a tip that he was in a wooded area
in northeast Houston about 1:45 a.m. Authori-
ties suspended a more than 12-hour search of
the area after bloodhounds and dozens of

away.
The suspect is described as a
white man in his 20s, about 6
feet tall, 180 pounds, with short
blonde hair.
A 42-year-old La Porte
woman was robbed on the Bay-
town East Freeway early Thurs-
day by a motorist who she
thought needed help.
The woman told police
was driving westbound on the
freeway just after midnight
when a vehicle behind her
began flashing its headlights,
then pulled in front of her car.

But another citizen called police after spot-
ting Motte huddled in his back yard under a
blanket about 6:30 p.m. The man said his dog
had been barking and he went out to investi-
gate. But Motte fled, beginning another search.
A bloodhound finally tracked officers to a
trailer in an industrial area where Motte, who
had stripped off his shirt and shoes while being
chased by the dogs, was recaptured wearing
only black spandex shorts. The U.S. Customs
Service used heat-seeking Blackhawk helicop-
ters to aid in the nighttime search.
' Authorities planned to question Motte Thurs-
day about the escape, particularly to ascertain
whether other jail employees or law enforce-
ment officers might have been involved in his
escape.
