FORT WORTH, July 8 (Sp)—The
future of aviation Is a ready here. That
is how A. P. Barrett, president of the
Southern Air Transport and its var-
ious subsidiaries, of which Texas Air
Transport is one, answers the report-
er’s invitation tp prophecy.
People still havf the habit,” Mr.
Barrett said, “(rf^thlnking obout avia-
tion entirely in terms of the future.
Certainly it has a great future! But
it has a great present as wbll; Air
transport is so new that they cannot
realize that all of the large cities in
the United States are already linked
up by ail lines and that within a few
weeks Jill the small cities as well will
be on the airways.
"Texas Air Transport begun opera-
tions February 6,11928—lees than a
year and a half ago! AH it had then
were contracts to carry air mail from
Dallas and Fort Worth through Waco
to Austin, Sait Antonio, Laredo, Hous-
ton and Galveston.
“Since then the San Antonio airmail
line has been extended from Laredo
to Brownsville, the Gulf Coast and St.
l'ammany Air Lines have b(“en acquir-
ed and air mall service extended from
Houston to Atlanta via New- Orleans
and passenger lines have-been started
from Dallas and Fort Worth to Hous-
ton and Galveston, to San Antonio
and Brownsville and to El Paso via
Big Spring and Midland.
' “In addition, various other passen-
ger lilies are planned. If our com-

companies.'.continue to grow for the
next few years as they have been
growing for the last few weeks, it will
be only a matter of months before
the entire western hemisphere is a
uetvCork of airlines extending in every
direction and serving small.as well
as large cities. .,
_ “And then It -will not be hat a few
more months or possibly years before
Instead of oiie or two airplanes each
way each day there will be 25 to 50.
The sky-dfner has already come in
the east; the sky-pullman will not
‘lag many years behind.
'All first class mail will be carried
toy planes: and most passengers. Only
,frBj^lipdp^S£SK^^ dis-
nces will be carried by other 'TiregBf
experienced pilots or in military flying
in experimental maneuvers. And with
the public convinced of the safety of
flying, aviation Is bound to expand,
for capital has already seen the phsei-
bilittes of the speedier mode of travel
and has poured, its resources Into the
new industry.
Texas is ideally located and blessed
with a climate that will make her pre-
eminent In this expansion. The ad-
vantages of Texas’ climate for aerial
activities were first recognized during
the war when both United States and
Canada designated' It as a training
center for aviation. It waa during
that time that the phrase, if you can
fly anywhere, you can fly In Texas,’
originated. Texas has a minimum of
storms and of icy, weather that in-
hibits flying and Is consequently an
ideal state for extended operations.
Another incentive to .the develop-
ment of aviation in this state is the
vast distances of tlm state. Texans
hale long been looking for means to
conquer the stretches of plains anu
prairies that lie between-El Paso and
Texarkana, between Amarillo and Gal-
veston. They have utilized highway
end railways In an attempt to re-
duce the distance that has been a hin-
drance to the unity of the state, and
they will not be slow to recognize and
utilize the advantages offered by 4
speedleTtalr transportation.
Accompaning, even perceding the
demand, will come the supply to. satts-
Texas Air Transport,
Inc.., has planned, a system o
ger lines, four of which are already
in operation, which will cover the
whole state and bring the cltleg.-of
to her transportation problem. South
American airways will feed through
Mexico Into Texas so that north and
south lines will cross east and west
lines over the level surfaces of this
state. •» — -—
“With all these advantages In the
development of aviation, the only limit
to the expansion of the Industry in
this state will be the vision of the
Texans themselves. And Texans do
not* have a reputation for a limited
range of new undertakings. Pioneer
in successive eras of progress. Texa:
will continue to lead In this new and
promising Industry.’

its vast dopigin hours closer together.
"The Texas topography, is also a
decided advantage to operations in
the .state. One of the most signifi-
•cant requisites for safe operation is
dear spaces of land that may be util-
ized for emergency landings. Aside
from the cap rock formation and the
western mountain region practically
the whole state is n series of landing
fields and even }n the broken regtons
■there are stretche^of land that w ould
accomodate an emergency landing.
