necessary to replant cotton and
some' farmers fear they will
have to;do so there will in some
localities be a scarcity of cotton

cotton seed that would have
been worthless for planting as
the germ was killed. Peaches

can be found in Texas for a

Brenham ; we have railroad fa-

cotton eed.
The Turf. Friday afternoon
there was a considerable gath-

flesh at the Fair Grounds to
witness a test of speed. There
was two races mile heats to

changed hands and the specta-
tors were all satisfied except
perhaps those who erred in
backing their judgement with
their money.

Death of Or. Hatchet
The many friends of this
gentleman will hear of his death
with regret This sad event oc-
curred at El Paso Monday the
4th inst. The doctor owned
some property near that place
and for several years had con-
templated going there and es-
tablishing a resort for invalids.
The opening of El Paso to the
outside world by mrans of rail-
road connection made the plan
feasible and after extensive
preparations Dr. Matchet Anal-
ly left here about the 12th of
last month stopping at Dal

old oil mill in condition to ship
and will ship it to Memphis
where it will be put in operation.
A mill having been burned at
this place makes an opening for
one to supply its place and the
parties with whom Mr. Venable
is connected have concluded not
to rebuild. This leaves the
coast clear here for the estab-
lishment of such an enterprise
and there it no better point in
the state. It is to be hoped
that an oil mill will be establish-
ed here in time for the next
crop.
An ex-county officer informs
the Banner that he counted
thirteen ex-convicts on the
streets on Saturday the majority
of them having been convicted
in this county in 1875 and 6
the crimes were: horse stealing
three ; thefts from house under
old statutes now repealed five ;
hog stealing three; murder
one ; assault to murder one.
He says that the majority of the
men arc law abiding and en-
deavor to live as good citizens.
Justice Hackworth of this
city has a world-wide reputa-
tion as a lecturer on morals.
Friday a man and woman stran-
gers were arrested on a charge
of vagrancy ; they were taken
before the justice and he
delivered them a moral lec-
ture with such force and effect
that they had not the least diffi-
culty in obtaining their own
consent to leave town. Moral
suasion when backed up by the
majesty of the law is a great
thing.
A commecial missionary of

aries all the same like the great
cities of Texas who has just
returned from an extended trip
up the main line of the Ceutral
reports business at the various
towns on the road as being

business doing in Brenham than
in any other town he was in

in the sum of one hundred dol-

and the defendant was re
leased from custody. This
case is a peculiar one there is
no doubt that Irah attempted to
steal the money but he was
drunk at the time and had been
drunk for several days. He has
been in jail since last fall and
there seems to have been doubts
in the minds of some ol the ju-
rors as to his intend at the time
of the attempted robbery and
his condition of mind ; some ot
the jnry did not consider him as
being responsible for his acts.
The County Commissioners

Wednesday. Several divorce

taken to Washington where a
preliminary examination was
held by justice G. W. Brooks
who fixed his bond at two hun-

I have just returned from a
trip through Williamson Lee
Milam and Hell counties. The
finest country I found was
around Georgetown. Farmers
generally arc behind with their
corn and cotton but wheat and
oats never looked better.
On my return to this lovely
village I fround Dr. Chaplin
Crane and Keifer holding a se-
ries of meetings. Last Satur-
day there were twelve conver-
sions. Sunday Dr. Chaplin was
compelled to go to Brenham
but returned in the evening.
Sunday afternoon about fifty
were up for prayer there being
one conversion ; eight joined
the church. Dr. Chaplin will
remain with us during the week.
Regret to report Mrs. Dr.
Holland in aad condition from
dropsy ; Mrs. Davis is also ill.
