BY RANKIN & LEVIN.
Thursday August 12 18SG.
A courts of fools on Sunday
lost successfully navigated tho
whirlpool rapids at Niagara. A
cask similar to tho ono used by tho
lunatic who first accomplished the
feat was usod. It will not bo long
beforo some- adventurer is dosbod
to pieces but happily tho world
will Ibso nothing by such an acci-
dont.
Tni tono of tho press in tho City
of Mexico has sensibly modifiod in
regard to tho Cutting affair ; tho
organ of PresidcntDiaz deals with
tho matter in a reasonable- spirit.
Cuttingj reputation is bad and
Americans in tho Moxican capital
feel that if tho Umtod States is to
tako issuo with Mexico tho cose
should at least bo based on a
citizen of reputable charaotor.
The San Antonio Timos is a warm
supporter of Governor Ireland. It
fully endorses tho governor's letter
to Socrotary Bayard and says this
stato has no favors to ask of tho
goncral government. It could pad-
dlo its own canoo any timo. This
talk is all very nico but suppose
Texas was to nndortako single
banded to mako war on Mexico
whero would tho money como from
to cary it on.
The Baltimoro Manufacturers'
Becord says thcro is at tho proscnt
timo urgent need of moro banking
capital in tho south. In tho state
of Georgia notwithstanding tho
largo incrcaso in her commorco
her banking capital is less than it
was in 18C0. In that year Angus-
la had a banking capitol of $9000-
000 moro by $2000000 than tho
onliro stato now has. Thcso fig-
ures surely indicate that thero is
something wrong in tho banking
system. -
Ik Iowa tho prohibition cranks
got saloons ont of the way by using
dynamito and in Iowa tho anti-
prohibitionists play (or ovon by
assassinating prcachors in tho dark
Tho ways of ono side arc as bad as
tho other and both go to show that
reason and common senso havo lost
their sway. Tho convcrsativo pco-
nln in Tnw.1 on it to thOmSClVCS
to put a stop to tho lawlessness of
cranks no manor wmcu siuu ij
may bo on.
Americans doing business in the!
City of Moxico aro not anxious for
tho United States to dcclaro war.
Tho Galvoston Nows alludos to
thorn as American hucksters and
says they aro on tho ragged edgo.
Just why tho Americans at the
Mexican capital should bo called
hucksters is not apparent. Tho
Mows says that in tho event of a
war tho City of Moxico would in
less than six months bo tho capitol
of ono of tho territories of tho
Untied Stales.
Cutting has been sontenred to
ono .years imprisonment in the
Chihuahua penitontiary. An El
Paso dispatch of tho 8th inst says
ho fears ho will be massacred on
some pretext. Ho sont tho follow-
ing dispatch to Governor Iroland :
'As a citizen of Texas 1 ask of you
tho protection tnat my friends as-
sure me you can and will extend
to me." Just what Governor Iro-
land can do in tho premises is not
apparent. Ho has no authority to
send troops to Moxico to rescuo
Cutting.
It is ostimalcd that 35000 or
20000 pcoplo wcro present at tho
Interstate drill on Saturday and
Sunday. Tho Brcnham Bifles
drilled for tho prizo on Satnrday
but failed to fulfill tho sanguine
expectations of their many friends.
Tho "swivol stack" swamped 'em
as it did several other companies.
On Sunday tho firo worsk at the
camp-ground drew a very largo
crowd. To day Tuesday tho prizo
will bo awarded and Camp Ma-
grudor Galveston will bo a thing
of the past.
The Cutting caso has como to a
standstill. Tho Secretary ol Stato
has dono all that he can do bo re
ferred the matter to congress and
congress has adjourned without
taking any action. It appears that
Cutting circulated tho obnoxious
nowspapcr in Mexico and that in
fact ho is guilty as charged by tho
Mexican authorities though tech-
nically ho committed no offenso
It is also shown that Cutting is a
hard citizen and that ho is work
ing for notoriety with a view to
future profit.
Tue Laredo Times is an ably
odited paper its great ability con-
sisting in abusing tho papers that
do not think as it does. Bccauso
tho Banner does not approvo ol

letter to Secretary Bayard and
docs not think that tho Hon. John

lho Banner is this; Tho Times
thinks that Governor Iroi'snd is the
groatost man in Texas and that ho
has inado tho greatest and best
governor lho State ever had. Tho
Banner thinks that Governor Iro
land is an honest man a good cili
son and a kind neighbor but that
to is wholly lacking in ability to
mako a Senator and that as gover-
nor ho has shown great weakness.
' And lor so thinking tho tho Times
says tho Banner lacks brains.
DEATH OF TJLDEA
Samuel J. Tildcndicd alius homo
at Groystonc on tho Hudson at
8:45 a. m. on tho4th inst. Mr. Til-
den had been in very feeblo health
forsorao time but his sudden death
was not oxpectcd. For somo timo
ho had been suffering from paraly-
sis and phjsitally ho was a wreck
although ho retained his menial
faculties unimpaired till tho Inst.
From n skctcn ol his life publish
ed in lho Galveston Ncwswccon-
donco lho following: Stnmucl
Jones Tildcn was born in New Le
banon Columbia county N. Y.
February 9 1814. Ho tamo of a
sturdy and honest race. I lis an-
cestors wcro among lho pilgrims of
Massachusetts. In 1790 John Til-
dcn tho grand father of Samuel J.
Tildcn removed from Massachu-
setts to Now York. Tildon's pa-
rents wore well-to-do people and
Samuel had tho benefit of a
thorough education. Ho entered
politics at tho ago of 18 and living
in tho same neighborhood with
Martin Van Burcn was thrown fre-
quently in his company. Jlo en
tered Yalo collcgo but his health
giving way irom too cioso atten-
tion to his studies ho was forc
ed to retire. At Yalo in 1837 ho
was a. member of tho class to which
William M. Evarts Chief Juslico
Wailo .Edwards Pierrcpont and
other famous men belonged. Ho
completed his academic courso at
tho University of New ork. He
was admitted to tbo bar in 1841
and opened an offico in New York
and was successful from lho start.
Ho mado himself master of a taso
beforo ho undertook to prosccuto
or dofend it. This was his rulo
through life. At ono timo ho was
tho editor of lho Morning News a
loading Democratic paper in New
York no was olectcd to tho leg-
islature in 1845 and a member of
tho Now York constitutional con-
vention ot 1846. In 1855 ho was
tho Democratic candidate for at-
torney general ofNcw York but
was boaton on account of his anli-
prohibition viotvs. From 1855 to
18C0 ho was engaged in all the
leading and most lucrative eases
boforo lho highor courts of New
York. Ho was famous for his ex
posure of Tweed and tho breaking
up of tho Twcod ring in New York
in 1872. As a reformer ho had no
equal. In 187C at tho National
Democratic convonlion held in St.
Louis ho was nominated for lho
presidency and was elected but by
Conspiracy inaugurated by the
.Republicans ho way swindled out
of tho offico by tho celebrated S to
7 vote Ho refused to countenance
any attempt to scat him in thoWhito
Honso by outraged Democrats.
Ho refused to accept tho nomina-
tion in 1880 and again in 1884.
The civil war had well-nigh de
stroyed lho Democratic party
which for moro than half a centu
ry had ruled lho country. Mr.
Tilden by his power of organiza
tion and his special aptiludo in
party management by his skill in
grappling with and his persistence
in waging war against corruption
inside and outsido his own party
mado posslblo tho rc-tnstatcmcnl
of tho Democratic party.
sSevon years ago ho dctormincd
to retire to enjoy that repose which
years of ardnons work in public
and private affairs entitled him to
havo and which an ample fortune
enabled him to find. In 1S79 ho
bought Groystone ono of tho state-
liest places on tho Hudson river
near JNcw lone cuy. j.iicro nc
spont tho greatostcr part of his
life for tho past seven years.
As a political manager Mr. Til-
don never had a supof ior W this
country. Ho always managed in
advance of party conventions to
direct tho people's thoughts toward
certain issuos and tho men whose
character and services most fitly
illustrated thorn. Ho trusted very
littlolo chances and still less to
combinations on tho evo of con-
ventions. Mr. Tildcn was a statesman and
a patriot and ho will lank in his
tory is ono of tho greatest men of
his ago. He vas never married
but ho leaves a number of ncph-
cws and nciccs.

likely that a ballot will bo had be

day. Au interesting and lively

It is not yet definitely decided
whether Ellis county is for Well

THE PIIOIUBITIOXISTS.
The Prohibitionists in Texas h.ivo
set to work to do ono of two things
capture the Domocralic parly or
disrupt it. They aro present in
forco at tho Slate convention and
will insist upon tbo introduction of
a plank into tho platform pledging
tho parly to submit a conslilulion-
al amendment on Prohibition to a
volooftho people. They also de-
mand that tho local option law be
strengthened so that it may bo en-
forced. Experience lias long sinco
taught that no law can be enforced
that has not got the moral support
ofthopooplcjin localities where the
moral sentiment of tho community-
is in favor of local option no diffi-
culty is experienced in enforcing
it. Thcro aro several stales that
now havo prohibitory laws but tho
laws do not prevent lho salo and
uso of liquor as a beverage. Pro
hibitionists howovcr claim that H
docs. Piohibition is a sumptuaiy
measure and tho Domoeratic pari
boiug ono that favors personal lib-
erty to tho fullest oxtcnt is oppos-
ed to all sumptuary laws and it has
rcpoatod by so declared timo and
again national and state platforms.
It tho present Stato tonvcntion
adopts a plank favoring the submis-
sion of a constitutional amendment
to lho pcoplo it will be a step back-
ward lor tho party and a signal
victory for tho Prohibitionists.
Tho Democratic party should main
tain its purity and ils principles
and if tho Piohibition clement in
it are not satisfied let them go out
and form a party of their ow n. If
they can succcod by law in prohib
iting tho manufacture and salo of
liquors they may with equal right
and equal propenty mako a law
prohibiting tho raising manufac-
turing and using of tobacco in any
of its forms; then thoy may pro
hibit tho uso of coffee or tea and so
on to tho end ol tho chapter. Fa
naticism is to a very great cxtont
at tho bottom of lho Prohibition
movement and fanaticism is gov-
erned by anything but reason.
When fanaticism steps in reason
steps out. Thoso who opposo pro-
hibition do not opposo temporanco
and if the Prohibitionists would
uso moral suasion to indaco people
to bo tempcralo and not use intoxi
cants of any kind as a boverago
thoy would havo tho good wishes
of tho masses of tbo pcoplo on thoir
side but so long as they hope to
mako peoplo tempcralo by legisla
tion so long will they meet with
opposition.
TnE Stato Allianco convention
latoly held at Cloburnc was not en-
tirely harmonious. A majority of
lho delegates decided to commit
tho order to certain political prin
ciples pai taking to a considerable
oxtcnt of communism and grocn-
backism. Sevcnty-fivo delegates
bolted and ninoty-two swallowed
tho programme Tho Waco Day
commenting on tho meeting .says:
"Iimay bg said that lho allianco has
split npon lho political rock at its
first venture and nothing can savo
t from final and rapid disintegra
tion except a return to its original
objects as a purely social moral
and financial fraternity." The
same fafo will ovrotako tho Knights

zition that undertakes to becomo a

proved a failure.

If lho Stato convention docs
itself justico and tho Stalo honor
it will adopt a straight out Dcm-
ociatic platform adhering to the
well known piinciples of the party
turning neither to thought nor the
left to please the Knights of La
bor Farmers allianco or Prohibi-
tionists. If a straight Democratic
platform devoid of all hips is
not good enough for them let them
secedo and set up a shop of their
own. Tho Domocralic party can
not afford to depart from its old
established principles as a party of
law Older and equal rights to all.
