that city to Brenham in 18G8. Short
ly after moving to this city Mr. Sir
ter engaged in the mercantile busi-
ness afterwards bu'H the Peabody
House and kept hotel. He was
operator for the Western Union
Telegraph company in Brenham for
t5i years and kept his office ii the
hotel. Ho quit the employ of the
company a little over a year ago
frj)m which time he had been an in-
valid up to his death. The deceased
enjoyed fine educational advantages
in his youth having been educated
in Europe. He was a republican
in politics but never entered upon
public life or held any office excepl
a clerkship in the senate of Texas in
1870P By his second wife he had
Sto children one son and four
daughters. The son was killed in
an accident on the Houston & Texas
Central road about eighteen yeas ago
at the age of seven. The widow and
four daughters survive him and
all reside 31 this city.

Nox Est On Thursday afternoon
two bad little boys Willie Cook
and another little fellow named
Hickey went to Mrs. K. Johnson's
rtdence in the northern suburb of
the city and threw stones into the
house at Mrs. Johnson and shot at
h&rwithniggershooters.'' Mrs. John-
son finding it impossible to overtake
the fleet-footed little scape graces
and administer a castigation to them
herself reported them to police
headquarters and Officer Tom Whit-
man effected their capture late in
the evening. The parents of the
little fellows secured their release
and promised to have them appear
in court Jb'riday morning but they
were "non est inventus' when the
time came. The practice of carry
ing "niggbr-shooters" is getting too
common around town again and
ought to be put a stop to. The Bax
m.: reported a short time ago the
circumstance of a fine horse belong-
ing to Mr. K. Grpss the musicman
having and eyo Shot out. The re
porter has smco hea-d of chickens

their pestiferous "nigger-shooters."

Poor Humanity I
The common lot is one of sorrow say at
least the pessim'sts they who look at the
worst side. Certainly what wou'd otherwise
be a bright existence is often shadowed by
some ailment that oveihangs it like a pal)
obscuring perpetually the radiance that e!-e
would light the path" Such an ailn-nt and
a very common one is nervousness or in
other words weakness of the nervous system
ficomlit'on only irremediable where insuffi-
cient or improper means are taken to relieve
it. The concurrent eiperience of nervous
people who have persistently used Hosteller's
Stomach Bitters is that it conquers entirely
supersensitiveness of the nerves as well as
d'seases so called which are invited and
sustained by their chronic weakness. As the
nerves gain stamina from the great tonic the
trouble disappears. Use the Sitters for ma-
laria rheumatism biliousness and kidney
troubles.

Independence. March 7. The no-
tice in the Banner a few days ago
that a colored woman had to take
the constable along to get her chil-
dren out of the colored institution
here must have got in the B inner
by bad information. The woman in
question brought her children last
June to the institution in Houston
to get an education and was there-
fore like aDy other father and mother
entitled to take them out whenever
she pleased. In her ignorance she
might have thought the directory
would make some difficulty to her
because she had promised to pay a
certain sum which was not complied
with. Of course such people have
no idea of the motives by which
such concerns in tho Catholic church
are governed. There was no consta-
ble needed to say the least.
