Have you beard th? news from
Melissa preciuci '
Baseball is proving a bigger fizzle
in Texas tbis year tban it was last
year. Texas is a poor place for all
kinds of professional tramps.
Judge Cook repudiates tbe tactics
of tbe Clark organs and admits tbat
tbe free pass question will do as
much barm as good to tbeir side.
The Sac Antonio Express says
that but for tbe railroads Texas
would be without a daily newspaper.
San Antonio had a daily newspaper
long before it had a railroad.
Have Messrs. Wheeler Hall and
Cook surrendered their free passes
since they have learned tbat they
were given for a consideration and
are a badge of servitude and fealty
to tbe railroad corporations?
A big. Hogg and commission club
has been organized at Flatonia and
it offers a standing reward of S50 to
any candidate for governor who has
not traveled on a free railroad pass
during the past twelve months.
'
The Clarkites are still exhibiting a
desperate determination to carry
their point or disrupt the demo-
cratic party. Not satisfied with the
way Wilbarger county has gone
they are trying to have a second
convention called. The result will
be a contesting delegation.
Hogg and Wheeler are the only
real candidates for governor. The
others are catspaws whose solo pur-
pose is to block the convention and
prevent the nomination of Hogg.
They know tbat they themselves do
not stand a ghost of a show but
think that between the two tbey
have a sufficient personal following
to seduce a bore third of the votes in
the convention away from Hogg.
.
SrscE CapL Faulkner of the Hous-
ton & Texas Central railroad
has plainly avowed tbe pur-
pose of the railroad companies in is-
suing free passes to public officials
and has negatived the idea of their
being issued as an "official courtesy"
no honest and self-respecting public
official who has a free paFS should
retain it.
1 District Judges we tbe last offi-
cials in tbo world to bold free passes
whn called on to administer justice
in a eauso between a railroad fiom
which tbey have accepted favois and
a poor and bumble citizen. Did
Judge Cook ride on a free pass wbilo
lie was district judge up to a short
time ago ?
Sevedal prominent citizens of
Huutsville who are leading spirits
in tbo movement to build a railroad
from that nlace to Breuhv.ii uud
who are liberal subscribers to tbe
stock figure prominently among tbe
list of members of a Hogg and com-
mission club that has been organized
there.

While the Clark organs areshoul-
ing against sumptuary legislation
and for "personal liberty" they keep
quietand make no attempt to explain
why nine out of every ten of the
newspapers in Texas that opposed
prohibition are supporting Hogg.
The Clarkites would better watch
the Houston Post. It is growing
lukewarm. It seems to have already
gone back on the anti-commission
platform and climbed up on the
fence.

The Huutsville Itsm concedes tbat
probably four fifths of the people of
Walker county are in favor of Hogg
and a commission and yet it is one
of the rabid Clark organs. This
raises a suspicion in the mind of the
Willis Index and causes it to inquire
if the Item man doesn't carry a free
pass. The Item treats the inquiry as
a piece of impertinence and does not
deipn an answer.
A uejieee of the Canadian par-
liament who was a sympathizer with
the South during the civil war told
the editor of tbo Baxxer once while
the writer was his guest that the
history of tbo war after it was over
was a revelation to the Canadians
"because during the war the reports
of tbe battles fought were cooked to
suit the tastes and sympathies of
Northern readers and tbey were
kept in ignorance of the true facts.
This is just tho way tbe Galveston
News and other Clark organs are
treating their readers at proscnt.
In attempting to criticise Judge
Cook's speech at Kyle the
Brenham Basseo. says: "He
knows as a lawyer that
corporations have no souls and no
individual or natural rights." Tho
Basner does not cito any law to this
effect. Noah Webster gives tho law
on the subject in a condensed form :
"Corporation: A body politic or
corporate founded and authorized
by law to act as a single person hav-
lne: the capacity ol transacting busi
ness as an individual." Dallas
News.
Let the reader bear in mind that
the Baxneb was speaking of Judge
Cook's harping .on and laying so
much stress upon such far-fetched
terms as "personal liberty" and
''sumptuary legislation" in connec-j
tion with the railway commission i
question and be will seo how puer-
ile the News is. A corporation may
be authorized "to act as a single
person" but can it as an individual
take a drink of whisky or violate tho i
excise laws 1

popular ntion seems to be that the
blood impurities and general lassitude of

To sum up v?e have three sources of blood

the excretory organs to eitract from the
