FARM AND HOME.
MOW THE IKISII PLANT POTATOES
When tho pressnt writer was a
boy his father hired an irishman
iresh irom tho old country to work
on tho iarm. Ho know nothing ot
our system of agriculture but was
bright anxious to learn and when
the field was furrowed for planting
potatoes and ho learnt that the
plants were to occupy tho furrows
he wanted to know what was to bo
planted between tho rows. It
scorned to him like a great waste
of ground and wanted to plant a
patch as thoy did in tho old coun-
try. Permission was given and ho
selected a half acroof rather moist
nearly level ground free from
stones tho loam of tho surface be-
ing well mixed with sand that had
gradually washed down from
higher ground and the subsoil was
a white sand. Patrick wan going
at it with his shape but was con-
vinced that much of tho work
could bo done with a plow and ac-
cepted the change. A coating of
manure was spread on and tho
ground was plowed into bods about
fivo feet wide. Then tho ditches
botween them were cleaned out
andtthe beds finished and smoothed
with tho shovel leaving the top
abont a foot above tho bottom ol
the ditches. The potatoes were
cut as is usually tho case lor plant-
ing and to plant them tho spado
or shovel was stuck into the sur-
faco of tho bod in a slanting posi-
tion and lifted up until a piece ot
potato could be dropped in behind
it then tho spado was withdrawn
and the spot smoothed over. They
wore planted in this way six or
eight inches apart all over the beds.
After tho plants were a few inches
high another coating of manure
was spread among them and cov-
ered with soil taken from bottom
of the ditches. This addition of
soil was repeated several times
during the season each operation
having some distinct name which
is of no importance to the result.
At harvest time the tops wero all
taken off and the beds dissectod
with a sixtined fork and it seemed
as if half the bulk of the bed to the
depth of a foot was potatoes. "No
measurement was made but the
crop was immense to say the least
and the potato large sound and
smooth.
It seems almost incrediblo that
potatoes would grow so planted
so much nearer than in our common
cultivation but the explanation is
probable in the fact that the soil
was enriched and pulverized to
groat depth and exposed to tho air
irom tho ditches so that the whole
was in tho condition of surface
sou. The system ot increasing
tbe depth and aeration of the soil
was in effect adding to tho surface
giving the roots a chance to extend
down instead of sideways. This
was quite an item in the old coun
try wnoro rent was more expen
sive man labor and with the pro-
sent condition ot the potato busi-
ness in this country ou aicount of
mo Deciles and tno area ol proper
son in home sections it may bo
worth trying here.
Another plan of raising potatoes
which tho Homo man tried in tho
garden was planting m drills. A
trench was made liko an. ordinary
furrow and tho sets plantod in it
about six inches apart tho so.il be-
tween tho trenches not being dis-
turbed until later. After tho
plants were six inches high tho
spado pas put into the soil with its
back to tho plants and not more
than three or four inches from
them andthespadofulof soil taken
up and turned overand replaced so
that tho portion which had been
exposed to the elements'came next
to the roots. This was done on
both sides of tho rows. The work-
man was questioned about cutting
on tne roots but be seemed to have
no fear of damage in thatdiroction.
.Later In tho season another strip of
sou was turned over with tho spade
and during the growing season it
was all loose'd in that way. The
result was not satisfactory as in tho
other case but a hint may bo taken
for some peculiar conditions where
tho soil 16 not dry enough to work
properly at planting time and can
be turned with a horse plow after
the plants are up. Tho manure in
tho latter case was applied in tbe
trench wh ch may be the reason
why the roots did not extend so as
to be injured by the close cutting
of the space. Weekly Union.
It is not common for a husbano
and wife to bo ordered together to
tho ministry but Mr. and Mrs. L.
"W. Sprague of Chicago were thus
accepted by tho Unitarians recent-Jy-
Fanny Davenpoit was a witness in

suit for libel against her and evaded
a question as to her age by saying
that sho was tweuty years on the
