plead guilty to stealing a horse and
was given the lowest sentence five
years in the penitentiary. He was
sentenced at once and perhaps was
in as good condition to view his sen-

the complacency which almost
amounted to contempt as any man
that ever received a five years sen-

from the walls to be tried and is
there on a similar charge under a
fifteen year sentence and will have
finished tbi3 sentence near ten years

At the residence of the brides
parents in this city Thursday at 1
o'clock p. m. Louis R. Bryan Esq.
of Quintana and Miss Mattie Shep
ard of this city were united in the
holy bonds of matrimony Rev. F.
Sebright Leigh of the Episcopal
church officiating with tho beautiful
and impressive ceremony of that
church.
The bride is the daughter of Col.
C. B. Shopard of this city a lady of
rare accomplishments ' both of head
and heart of modest mien and win-
some ways a lady whoso loveliness
each srrace displavs to such advan
tage that combined it ifi no wonder
they enchanted tbe mind of Mr. Bry-
jan ana set him to pienaiug a sun
in which he hau gaiiieu the crown-
ing victory of his life In tne higher
courts of love.
The groom is a former Washing-
ton county gentleman and was a
prominent attorney ut the Brenham
bar until a few months ago but fore-
seeing that tho Mouth of the Brazos
was ultimately to be the future
great deep water port of the Texas
coast he went down and established
himself there and getting in on the
"ground floor that followed the se
curing of deep water and has not on
lymade money but established him
self from the very hrst as one oi the
le'ading movers in all the enterprises
of that section was elected Mayor
of that city which position he re-
signed a short time since on account
of his growing law practice and is
secretary of the Brazos Terminal
company. Mr. Bryan is too well
known here for the Banner to in-
dulge in any lengthy ulogy of merits
his high standing integrity his recog-
nized ability and. his general whole-
souled disposition rendering him a
general favorite when here and
which now stands out with an added
lustre since his departure which was
universally regretted and we have
no doubt the entire community will
join the Banner m wishing for Mr.
Bryan and his lovely bride a full
measure of their new found happi
ness at their deep water home at
the Mouth of the Brazos.
They left on the 3 o'clock train
for Houston and Galveston Thurs
day afternoon.
RUSSIAN E3LMIGKANTS.
About seventy-five Russian emmi
grants arrived in Brenham Wednes
day night and were the observed of
all observers around the Union
depot until the departure of the
.Navusota train at o'clock.
To say that they were travel
stained and hard looking but'mildly
express their appearance for they
were actually filthy looking their
haggage. all in old sacks.not a box
or trunk being among the crowd.
Out of the seventy five there were
about thirty children ranging in age
all the way from a week old infant
to ten and twelve year old lads and
lassies.
They were en route to Planters-
ville where there is a.colony of Rus
sians and tne fact that tickets for
them from here was telegraphed for
by parties over there led some one
to inquire if they were pauper im-
migrants ? but one of them said he
had three thousand dollars all of
which goes to show that one can't
judge by the appearance for they
looked like paupers.
About 2 o'clock three or four of
the same kind male members of the
party arrived here on a cross tie
pass over the Santa Fe from tho di-
rection of Galveston but how far
they had walked could not be ascer-
tained. Only one or two of the
party could Fn-k a single word of
English.ahd .those not sufficiently
iu uiiue tuemseives inieuigioie.
If half the oppression prevails in
ivussia mat is reported they are
justifiable in seeking an asylum
here where in a few years they can
have as much voice in the govern-
ment as they had been born here.
