The decision on an injunction
that would block Goose Creek
CISD from implementing it’s
“pocket zoning” plan is expected
to come by Aug. 1. The TEA has
stated that the board was “justi-
fied” in adopting the plan. The
plan would help achieve ethnic
balance between the two high
schools. Three predominately
white sections would be moved to
the Ross S. Sterling High School
attendance zone while three pre-
dominately minority sections
would be moved to the REL zone.
The official order to build the
Baytown Civic Center has been
given. The Capitol Improvements
Committee reaffirmed its approval
of the site after some concern was
expressed regarding possible
flooding on the site. A new city
hall that will be adjacent to the
center is also being constructed.
Galveston. In 1939 he married
Floydella Saxon and went to work
for Culpepper’s Furniture. In 1969,
he opened His store on North
Pruett and Williams. He turned
over the business to his son Larry
two years ago, but had continued
to be a presence at the store where
he would drink coffee and talk to
his old customers everyday. The
store is now closed.
The cost includes an $ 11,000 attor-
ney fee, the cost of appointing
Deputy Superintendent WD. Hin-
son as superintendent and the cost
of appointing Dean Walter Rundell
as president of Lee College. The
fee also includes the cost of a rent-
ed public address system used dur-
ing the three week hearing at the
Robert E. Lee High School Audi-
torium, coffee, extra police during
the hearing, travel expenses for
trustee Boyd Hill and Hinson and
the cost of an attorney who investi-
gated the validity of Gentry’s con-
tract. However, the fee does not
include the cost of operating the
auditorium during those three
weeks, time lost by employees
who testified and the distraction of
school officials from their normal

Mexico City where she will spend
the rest of the summer.
Goose Creek CISD representatives Dr. Jerry Roy, center,
and Julie Desporte, right, express appreciation to Exxon
Refinery employees for their participation in this summer's
job shadowing program. The program enables GCCISD
junior school students to work one-on-one with profession-
als in a career field of interest to them for two weeks during
the summer. Front row from left are Exxon employees Mark
Herzfeld, Kristen Hoaglund; GCCISD Superintendent Roy;
Exxon employees Stacey Carr and Eric Beam; and
Desporte, De Zavala Elementary School counselor who
helps coordinate the program. In back are Exxon employ-

Nearly $19,000 is the cost tax
payers of Baytown and Lee Col-
lege have had to pay for the unsuc-
cessful effort to oust Superinten-
dent George H. Gentry from his
position with the school district
and as president of Lee College.
After nearly four decades in the
furniture business and 16 years
with his own store, W.C. Rogers
has finally retired. A native of

Stephanie Avalas, left, and Marlene Torres enjoy working on
computers in the "wilderness” area of Camp Learned-a-lot
at Travis Elementary School this summer. The stuffed animal
toys perched on top of the computer stations, as well as a
forest of construction paper trees, contribute to the camp-
like setting.
