Ingrown toenails require
professional treatment
he pain of an ingrown toenail leads many people to try different
methods of self-treatment. Although nail trimming and over-the-
counter medicines may temporarily relieve the pain, there Is a
simple procedure a podiatrist can perform to end the problem permanently.
An ingrown toenail is a common deformity of the nail in which one or both
sides of the nail grow into the adjacent flesh. Often painful, the problem
becomes more serious when bacteria, caused by perspiration, results in an
infection of the nail.
Ingrown toenails often are the result of improper nail care. Cutting the
nails too short or ‘digging* at the nail comer are a primary cause of ingrown
toenail. Toenail injuries or tight fitting shoes are other causes of ingrown
toenail.
Professional treatment takes two forms: a temporary measure for pain
relief and a permanent measure. With temporary treatment, the patient must
understand that the ingrown toenail will recur. During treatment, a local
anesthetic is administered, the problem area is cleared of any infection and
the offending portion of the nail removed. The patient then follows
instructions for soaking the foot and may take a prescribed antibiotic.
The permanent solution involves removing the ingrown portion of the
nail. Using s> special instrument, the podiatrist cuts and redefines the nail
shape so that it is straight rather than curved. The root area of the removed
section of nail is then treated with a medication to prevent regrowth. This
procedure is performed in the office with a local anesthetic. The patient will
need to soak the foot as instructed. There is virtually no disability and the
individual can usually resume normal activities the next day.
When the pain of Ingrown toenail occurs, don't delay in obtaining
treatment. Proper foot care can help you feel better all over._

Slammer post-season tournament plans for 1993 include competitions in Hurst, Tx., sometime in June, the
TAAF State Tournament in Austin in June, the USSSA State Tournament in Garland, Tx., the ASA State
Tournament in Baytown in July and national tournaments in either Midland, Tx. or Hutchinson, Kansas.
The team members and their parents work hard to raise money through candy sales, car washes, bake sales,
raffles, and a Bar-B-Que. But without the support of Baytown & surrounding communities our efforts to compete
on a state & national level would not be possible! We again ask for your support in our fund raising efforts for the
1993 season.
Thank you for your support.
